That's too bad. I've heard that in the old days, before steroids were well understood, those guys injected massively unnecessary amounts. Multiple organ failure sounds like the way I hear of bodybuilders dying. Bummer.

^ Fake news. The Eagles will actually go 10-6, but I always say they will go 16-0 and win the S.B. at this time of year. It's a tradition.

The link “Usain Bolt, Lance Armstrong and the Duck Test” in the story above, is also an interesting read.

“When people ask me about Bolt, I say he could be the greatest athlete of all time. But for someone to run 10.03 one year and 9.69 the next, if you don’t question that in a sport that has the reputation it has right now, you’re a fool. Period.”

I'd pay to see that, but since Johnathon Livingston Seagal is a Russian citizen, and George is one of the kneeling minority trouble makers, Trump might fix the fight. ;)

Wikipedia:

Quote:

On October 25, 1999, a month after the American team rallied to win the Ryder Cup and four months after his U.S. Open victory, Stewart was killed in the depressurization of a Learjet. He was flying from his home in Orlando, Florida, to Texas for the year-ending tournament, The Tour Championship, held at Champions Golf Club in Houston. Traveling on a Monday morning, Stewart was planning to stop off in Dallas to discuss building a new home course for the SMU golf program with Dallas-based real estate developer Jeff Blackard. The last communication received from the pilots was at 9:27 am EDT, and the aircraft made a right turn at 9:30 am EDT that was probably the result of human input.

At 9:33 am, the pilots did not respond to a call to change radio frequencies, and no further contact from the aircraft was received. The aircraft was apparently still on autopilot and angled off-course, as observed by several U.S. Air Force (and Air National Guard) F-16 fighter aircraft as it continued its flight over the Southern and Midwestern United States. The military pilots observed frost or condensation on the windshield (consistent with loss of cabin pressure) which obscured the cockpit, and no motion was visible through the small patch of windshield that was clear.

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators later concluded that the aircraft suffered a loss of cabin pressure and that all on board were incapacitated due to hypoxia as the aircraft passed to the west of Gainesville, Florida. A delay of only a few seconds in donning oxygen masks, coupled with cognitive and motor skill impairment, could have been enough to result in the pilots' incapacitation. The NTSB report showed that the aircraft had several instances of maintenance work related to cabin pressure in the months leading up to the accident. The NTSB was unable to determine whether they stemmed from a common problem.

...

At the time of his death, Stewart had won $12,673,193 in career earnings. He won over $2 million during the 1999 season, and finished seventh on the year's money list.

Former NHRA Pro-Stock drag racer Bob Glidden died yesterday (Dec 17), at 73.

From Wiki:

Quote:

Bob Glidden (August 18, 1944 –December 17, 2017) was an American drag racer. He was retired from Pro Stock racing in 1997 and returned in 2010.[1] Glidden retired as the driver with the most wins in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) history at that time (a feat recently topped by 16 time Funny Car champion John Force), and he is currently the third most successful drag racer of the professional class drivers (sixth when counting sportsman national event winners). Glidden won 85 NHRA National Events. In the Professional classes, he currently is behind Force (141) and Warren Johnson (97). Glidden's ten Pro Stock championships included five in a row beginning in 1985.[3] Among his numerous accomplishments, Glidden won nine straight NHRA national races in 1979 and was the No. 1 qualifier 23 times in a row, including the entire 1987 season. At one point, he won 50 eliminations rounds in a row.

You need games like that to work things out. Once the left side of the O-line is worked out, and Nick gets some tape time to understand what Alshon Jeffery does, the Eagles will win the Super Bowl.

classicman 12-29-2017 08:06 AM

One can hope. Nick had plenty of open receivers. He consistently made the wrong decision as to who and more importantly when to throw the ball. I'll be watching those two factors the most this week. Also, with the 13 personnel & overloaded formation the Raiders employed, our D now has something new to deal with also.

xoxoxoBruce 01-26-2018 11:30 AM

Time to step back and evaluate what you do for fun.

Quote:

Too many of us are beholden to social-media expectations, the subjective scoring of action sports, and a desire to push increasingly out-there limits. Mountain bikers who once explored the woods to simply blow out the lungs now time their descents with Strava. Climbers who used to clip in and coach partners on big walls now free solo for sponsor dollars driven by Instagram. To impress followers, backcountry skiers accustomed to safe low-angle hippie pow followed by hibachi beers now yo-yo laps on the Grand Fucking Teton.

Increasingly, what we do outside is less about enjoying the activity itself as an intrinsic good, and more about planning ways to go bigger, faster, and farther, often for our selfie-stick mounted cameras. And so it went that once healthy outdoor pursuits devolved into suicide clubs.

Griff 01-28-2018 10:48 AM

That needed to be said. Mountain Biking is an absolute blast but in the downhill places you have non-athletes taking highly athletic risks.

Happy Birthday Papa Bear!!

George S. Halas, founder/owner/coach of the Chicago Bears, would have been 123 years old today.

Quote:

Halas (coaching record--> 318 wins, 148 losses, 31 ties), a pioneer both on and off the field, made the Bears the first team to hold daily practice sessions, to analyze film of opponents to find weaknesses and means of attack, place assistant coaches in the press box during games, place tarp on the field, publish a club newspaper, and to broadcast games by radio. He also offered to share the team's substantial television income with teams in smaller cities, firmly believing that what was good for the league would ultimately benefit his own team. A firm disciplinarian, Halas maintained complete control of his team and did not tolerate disobedience and insubordination by players. He also insisted on absolute integrity and honesty in management, believing that a handshake was sufficient to finalize a deal; few, if any, intermediaries were necessary.

Halas's career ledger reads as follows: 63 years as an owner, 40 as a coach, 324 wins, and 8 NFL titles as a coach or owner. His 324 victories stood as an NFL record for nearly three decades, and are still far and away the most in Bears history; they are three times that of runner-up Ditka.[20] He was a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
~from Wiki

The NFC champions are presented the George S. Halas Trophy each year, and, to this day, the Bears still wear GSH on their jerseys. When Halas died, in 1983 at the age of 88, he was the last surviving participant of the meeting that formed the NFL in 1920.

Happy Birthday Papa Bear!!
