The Big H

Not really a man's subject, but with Mrs CF currently in hospital having undergone the operation last Thursday, if only because of the remarkable change it has produced from a psycholgical point of view, I feel that I have to mention it.

My lovely wife had been suffering from problems since early last year. She thought she was going into menopause, having continuous bleeding, and throughout the last 6 months involving fresh oxygenated blood which wasn't right or healthy.

Investigations by GP and then specialist confirmed that she wasn't anywhere near menopause and that the bleeding was related to problems in her cervix and uterus. A biopsy followed just before Christmas and this produced the conclusion that she was in a pre-cancerous state.

There was a choice between close monitoring and annual biopsies, or the hysterectomy. As she suffers from an inherited blood pressure problem, operations have always been a difficult area, but the specialist's recommendation was for the hysterectomy.

So it happened, with much uncertainty and wishing to pull out of the operation occuring at frequent intervals - right up until the day and half an hour before going into theatre. But now the relief of knowing that a dark shadow, in the form of cancer laying in wait, has been removed is abundantly evident - she looks a different woman, and all the stress of the last few months has lifted literally overnight (well, 3 nights anyway, but who will argue).

I'm now looking forward to having her home again and to knowing that the future will be so much easier on her than all that the past year has thrown her way.

Who would have thought that something that seemed in itself so dreadful could produce such an amazing result. But then, as I said when I started, I'm a man, so what can I know about such things....

I'm really glad everything worked out for the best, CF! My mom had a hysterectomy several years ago due to benign fibroid tumors which had just grown beyond reas9onable size. She had some hormone balance issues for a few months after, but nothing worse than standard menopause symptoms from what I understand.

Give our best to Mrs. CF. Just the reduction of stress will be a big plus for her.

All my best wishes to Mrs CF. A number of my Mum's friends have been through it, but at the end of last year a work colleague 2 years older than me had it done and that really brought home the reality.

I do know by association that recovery will take longer than she expects. Whatever the doctors say, add on another 8 weeks. She'll really need your support especially at the beginning.

I'm so pleased to hear that it's been a positive experience for her. I hope her healing is as easy as it can be and she settles down to appreciate the benefits asap.

Glad to hear it's all gone well, CF - you keep on cherishing that woman of yours!

I'll keep the Mrs. and you in my thoughts. Glad it's working out better than you hoped.

It's nice to hear the good news. Hope she continues to get well.

My friend is a pretty good seamstress. She made her mom a "hysterectomoose" stuffed animal as a get-well present. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I didn't realize that royalty was posting on this forum... Your Highness!

Best of wishes to your Duchess!

Aah, yes, Camilla - I think knowing that might set Mrs CF back a bit!

Thanks for all your wishes. Judging by the conversation we had tonight the biggest problem at the moment is the absence of a glass or two of Frex! Needless to say a bottle is now waiting in the fridge! Home tomorrow at 9.30 am. I think she might last until 10.30.....

I must say she is looking very well and not like someone who endured such a massive two-hour op 5 days ago. I think the stress of the past 6 months was more telling than she realised, and that's now lifted. It'll be good to have her home.

My Mother had one of those , she was ok for the most part but as mentioned befor watch those hormones , be able to tell her " dear I love you BUT !!! I think you need to take one of your chill pills . " in a logical and fair manner

In my experience, women who need a hysterectomy usually have justifiable fears involving loss of their womanhood and such, but in the end, they always feel better when its all done with.

It is a blessing that Mrs CF has come through this well, and I'll be sending good vibes to the both of you across the pond.

Thanks Patrick. Julia, my wife, is now home. Not such a good day though, as she thought she was able to move around more than she could. Who would have thought that even the handheld shower head could be so heavy, let alone the plastic jug kettle. It's all turned out to be a painful lesson but at least now she is doing what she needs to do and that is to rest completely. It's probably more difficult for someone like her who tends to be active and wanting to get on with things.

Should see the beginnings of a parade of her friends beginning to call from tomorrow and over the next few days, a good number of whom have been through the op themselves and so will be knowledgeable company.

After the dramatic and accelerated recovery over the few days while in hospital, things are going to be slower from now on, something that I know she will find hard to accept, but she's sensible enough to do so, I am certain.

Glad to know she's home and doing well Cycle. Quite a few of the women in my family have had this proceedure, and they all came through it well too. The only thing they've said was a downside was that in some ways they had a few psychological issues due to having had such feminine parts removed. I hope the doctors talked to you both about this as a possible side effect which might not become apparent for some time.
