No problem. I'm sure I'll be lurking this thread a bit as I go through the old puzzle (I'm finally going to read Dance, Dance, Dance.)

Speaking of the old puzzle, it's hosted here: thisisnotapuzzle.com

Getgo 10-23-2012 03:59 PM

Madge Was Her Name.

Now i'm on the page after those numbers (i just clicked on the globe of the truck)
When ever i mouse over the sign it come up with "What a marvelous shape"
Luckily chrome allowed me to disable any messages from the webpage so i could click on the sign without the pop up message. The page loads up another login with the words "what a lovely drape they make". Oh btw Kristian Boruff... didn't hey used to work for machinima? Help me out here I'm stumped

glatt 07-19-2013 03:37 PM

Hi Chen, welcome to the Cellar.

I had forgotten all about this thread.

BigV 07-19-2013 03:39 PM

It LIVES!!!!

Hello Chen, welcome to the cellar. I hope you like it here, I hope you find some (other) interesting stuff to talk about. Because our "This is not porn" activity has been... dormant for some time now. That makes you the de facto leader. ONWARD!

InfiniteIce 11-05-2013 06:09 PM

So, did nobody notice that thisisnotporn.com is back, and the puzzle is brand new? Or am I missing a hidden thread.

This guy o0n noticed. I've progressed one step past the Madge was her name page. If there is any interest I will post up hints or steps to what ive found, whatever cellarians like. I did post a picture of what i found on ([Insert fast unmodded retarded imagedump site), and it seems nobody had seen it yet o maybe I am the first. Probably not though ;)

pyrephoenix 11-06-2013 09:41 AM

InfiniteIce, I've seen a couple mentions of "the next page" cropping up here and there, so I've been trying to dig for it myself. So far the only Madge I've found related to 'something terrible' has been the girl in the Hunger Games, but I'm not having much luck relating it to tinp.

----------------
Offtopic: I'm SilverPhoenix from previously in the thread; I lost my yahoo email account long ago and can't convince PTB that I'm me.

BigV 11-06-2013 10:26 AM

I love this thread. It's like listening the live SETI feed piped through Stephen Hawking's voice processor after being translated by Google translate's Speak-N-Spell ---> Swedish Chef.

InfiniteIce 11-07-2013 05:05 AM

Alright. so I think I've found the first clue to part 2.

I obviously know how I got this. Do you? Will update in a bit.

http://i.imgur.com/5sLp8CT.jpg
(Too big to embed)).

Yes, this was acquired from TINP.

Also, the colors don't matter.

InfiniteIce 11-07-2013 07:28 AM

Here's how I figured out/got this.

The sound/song playing on the page is tinp.wav in the source. It took me a few days to wonder why he would use a .wav, the filesize is so huge, and this file does not need to be lossless...i was going to see what the encoder info was. Maybe it was just named wav because of compatibility with his webhost or something. So I downloaded it. Why would he server a 33MB wav file..?

Open it up in a spectral analyzer to create a spectrogram. Any DAW like Audition or Ableton will do this if you have one, but if you don't, there are free ones but they aren't as nice to look at, change colors, or zoom as much. Audacity is a free DAW.

If you JUST want something free and fast to show the spectrals and never plan to do any kind of audio getting, get "Spek" or "Spectro" (two different programs) from www.spek.cc & spectro.enpts.com respectively. I have used both, they are safe and work fine.

You'll see a bunch of 'sound waves', more or less (distribution of frequency of a sound clip.). The color of them might be awful depending on the program you chose. Sometimes it can be changed (high-contrast helps see details better.) Zoom in on the waveform..

You are presented with a shadow of a man in the middle. On the left and right, to me look like pairs of hands reaching out toward the man. The hands on the right side look like they are in jail or behind bars.

There are a few examples of this in commercial CDs. The most famous is probably from Aphex Twin. Nine Inch Nails has done one as well (easy to find on google. Or just look up "famous specrograms/graphs.

Does anybody recognize anything about the image? I will probably try it in a few different colors to see if anything else pops out at me.

Things I have tried: Splitting the file into two based on stereo positions (So, basically get a waveform for the left speaker, and one for the right.) Playing just one speaker reveals nothing new. I've tried filtering down the noise to decipher the words. I've tried taking out the 'picture' via editing but nothing useful. Tried playing with AudioPaint for a little bit.

Tangential but probably very related things in figuring out its meaning:
imagesynth. just google it.
Audio Steganography, which means "..the art and science of encoding hidden messages in sadio formats in such a way that no one, apart from the sender and intended recipient, suspects it.."

Stuff that probably isn't relevant but I'll post just in case. tinp.wav was made in ProTools and last encoded on 2012-10-08 at 01:00:09 AM. It was encoded at 48kHz for some reason. It definitely didn't need to be. Might just be the default protools option, I'm not sure.

xoxoxoBruce 11-07-2013 10:34 AM

Steganography... holy shit!

pyrephoenix 11-07-2013 11:55 AM

edit: okay, didn't realize there was a page 82. When the image was used originally someone identified it as from Leatherface's Cherry Knowle album, without any text (I still don't know if there's any previous source). The music itself is Aileen Stanley singing Sweet Indiana Home, written by Walter Donaldson.

InfiniteIce 11-07-2013 08:53 PM

Where/how did they figure that out Pyre? Did you just recognize the album cover or is there another discussion somewhere?

Who recognized it?

pyrephoenix 11-07-2013 09:26 PM

It was first mentioned here on page 67 by Deius Infectus (post 995; the song was ID'ed and lyrics written out in posts 992/1005.). The original homework on both spectrograph and covering song was done on the then-official TINP forums, sadly now (apparently) lost to time.

To be fair, the only reason I was able to pull up as much info today as I did was because I took three hours last night and reread this whole thread. I've been going to the current Madge page for several months now and completely missed that the song we've got now is the same one that appeared back in 2006.

InfiniteIce 11-07-2013 10:42 PM

oh wow not sure how i missed that. that would have made progress a lot faster hahaha. Ok,.. on to solving the next part

pyrephoenix 11-07-2013 11:19 PM

So far the only other thing I've found on the new version is there's two different home pages, one at index.htm and one at index.html; .htm has a broken div in the markup (<div id="mainimg"<br />).

Also I'm not sure the new puzzle has anything more than this front page, but it's sure fun to be looking again.

InfiniteIce 11-07-2013 11:49 PM

Googling indiana "madge" (with the quotes) gives a lot of results about one person.

The context of it very much reminds me of researching the Zuiderzee.

KKK Scandal with a prominent man (He was the 'Grand Dragon' apparently). he ended up kidnapping and raping her and she poisoned herself. As she was dying she gave a court testimony about the event. The whole thing ended up basically destroying the KKK.

http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/project...onaccount.html

Decided to go back to the very basics of solving things and google words together. Maybe we are too used to the 'tricks' and difficulty that we have overlooked something obvious, and i dont Madge's identity mentioned anywhere else in this thread. ~

Kirkpad 11-15-2013 06:17 AM

Based on what the (supposed) creator has been saying on the thisisnotporn.com Facebook page, the opening page is not meant to be solved.

The phrase "Please wait here." is probably just letting us know to wait until puzzles are actually posted.

I've been using the internet for 10+ years and I am SHOCKED that I have not heard of this whole thing until now. I will be spending some free time over the next couple days re-reading this thread and checking out the original puzzle.

Also, Madge apparently means "Child of Light". Maybe it's just a way of saying we can see the light... or something.

Anyways stoked to check out the forum, it looks like there's a nice little community here!

orthodoc 11-15-2013 06:30 AM

Hi Kirkpad, pyrephoenix, and InfiniteIce! Welcome!

InfiniteIce 11-15-2013 06:38 AM

Just to add onto my previous madge theory, http://www.discogs.com/Aileen-Stanle...elease/3600048 was released in 1922 (same time as the madge link above happened.)

http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/4964/
Looks like here's the original file used on the TINP page (it was obviously cleaned up and modified in protools but you can tell this is the one.)

even if we aren't supposed to figure it out yet, gonna write it down so i dont forgot. just in case.

edit: hello orthodoc!

edit2: slightly interesting, there is also a tinp.mp3 off the main page (in addition to the .wav that plays). Kind of odd that there is a 192 kbps mp3 that does nothing, but there is a wav file that plays instead. Either the wav was lossy transcoded or the mp3 is there for some (or no) reason. probably meaningless.

"Cherry Knowle is the first full-length by English punk band Leatherface. The album is named after Cherry Knowle mental hospital in Ryhope, Sunderland, and the albums cover reflects the hospital's Victorian origins."

Also, Hi guys! Glad to be here (finally :P )

the "Madge" InfinteIce supplied a link for was raped on a train.

"What began as a vicious rape on a night train from Indianapolis to Chicago ended with arrests of Indiana's governor and other high state officials. "

And Infinte, you mentioned the second page?!?!

Found this (it's a poem):

Her Name was Madge

Rum-balls and marzipan
announced her appearance
every Christmas
in those far-away tinselly days
when I was small.

Her name was Madge.
(the term spinster never suited a soul so well)
Stooped and bony,
she had long hair coiled up on top
and ankles that could have turned men's heads.
She grew lily of the valley
in her garden
‘on the west side with just a hint of the sun’.

She adored me.
Minded me often.
Reminded me
of the need for family.
(even though we weren’t really hers)

She lived alone in the big house.
Nursed both parents
into their graves, apparently.
Mum said ‘he’ had been a tyrant.
‘Drove away the only gentleman friend she ever had’.

Later she gave me recipes
penned in her perfect copperplate
‘It’s the J nib that makes the difference’.

I recall the story she told each year
about the only time I saw her with her hair down.
‘Madge… (she liked me to call her that)
You look just like a girl -
from the back.’

She died of cancer in the end.
Left all her money to her proper family -
the ones who never bothered with her.

kinda reminds me of The Disaster Artist, well, the subject of The Disaster Artist. So, *so* obtuse and so intense, and it just keeps going from it's own momentum.
