2/16: Aurora from satellite

I think this was from the astronomy pic of the day.

"The visible sensor has low-light capability to allow the imaging of nighttime phenomena such as the aurora seen here as a band of light stretching from New England into the northern Plains. City lights are also plainly visible - Chicago is near the center of the image, just south of the bright band. This striking aurora was visible to observers as far south as Georgia and southern California!"

Hey UT, do us a favor and post the link where you find these great IotDs, if they're on the web. So many times I'd like to see more. Thanks, 03#.

Yee-ha! My 100th post!

If I can. It's hard to save all the details. This one actually came from the earth science pic of the day, which I use often for IotD posts. The direct link to the above image is:

A lot of times there won't be any other details, because the images that come from the wire services including Yahoo! News just have a caption and nothing else. Then I just put the pertinent details in the post.

Thanks, that is a very cool site. That's what I mean.

All you other Cellarites should check it out, too.

As you can see in the circle, my stepdad is adamant about keeping lights on the flags in front of my parents' house.

I wonder how much states pay to light up their borders so that we can see them on these pictures?

Heh heh heh... If you look real close you can see it, "Border delineation brought to you by the Association of State Governors a wholely owned subsidiary of Big Oil Inc."

That WOULD be kinda cool if that actually occurred. It would serve almost no real purpose, except if you wanted to highlight the size of your state (if you're one of the larger states)...or if you REALLY wanted the aliens to land in your state.
