9/12/2003: Newborn panda thrives

http://cellar.org/2003/panda3wks.jpg

The newborn from three weeks ago is doing quite well, and "It's a Boy!" They couldn't work out whether it was male or female until its second exam, which you see above from Wednesday. They "stole" the baby from its mom for a mere six minutes while mom was eating.

Cute little smiling laddie.

There are only about 1200 pandas in the world.

Any word on the twin?

Undertoad 09-12-2003 11:38 AM

The twin didn't survive.

Thanks Toad! The girls love the animal pics.

Cute little baby panda. Big difference from the little speck on his mama's chest last time UT posted a pic. of him. I haven't been following though, UT. Did the other baby end up being stillborn?

So, the twin died and the turd lived?

Thanks dave for pointing out the obvious, but I was asking UT if he had any more specific info. other than "twin didn't survive".

Undertoad 09-12-2003 12:59 PM

I tried to get more info on the other but didn't find anything. But I did find they've put video of this very exam online. (Click on "It's a Boy") It's fun to watch, because in the middle of it, the little bear lets out a few squeaks. They don't do very much to the cub, but he protests anyway. (You can even see the hands of the press photographer who took the above shot)

From the zoo site:

"The second twin, whom zoologists had expected to be stillborn, was birthed some three days after the first. It lived for a week before succumbing to PIV, or Panda Immunodeficiency Virus."

Ouch. That's not a good sign for his future sex life, if they can't even tell if he's male. :D I think some of the daily spam I get may have some products that might help him out.

Of course, isn't the entire problem that Pandas are so stoned all the time they just lay around instead of mating anyway? Or is that the Koalas?

Quzah.
