4/27/2003: Goldfish in a sling

http://cellar.org/2003/slinggoldfish.jpg

Once again the animal queue is longer than the regular queue of images and so we have a happy Sunday. This goldfish is 17 years old and lives in a restaurant in Scotia, NY. He's so old that he's developed a problem with his air bladder, and so he has been outfitted with this sling to keep him upright and happy.

Fishy

I wonder though, can he still swim?

It looks like he's stuck there without being able to move at all. If that's so, I don't think he'd be a very happy fish...but, being that old, I'm sure he forgets stuff alot. :)

(S)He can swim with effort. The floating sling just keeps him/her from dragging on the bottom. Kind of like a wheelchair. Slingchair? Floatchair?

it looks like he's sad.

Apparently this fish's name is "Dick." That's according to the office email I received about this on Friday morning.

I walked over to the guy who sent it to me and said, "I can't email you what I want to say about this, so I'll just say it. There, at the restaurant, the patrons watch Dick. Here, at this place, we employees do dick."

MachineyBear 04-27-2003 06:46 PM

Does "Dick" have a left eyeball? It just looks like an empty socket to me, but I'm no fish doctor.

Poor Dick.

One of my friends has a tank full of fancy goldfish. One of them had a smiliar problem, but he wasn't as advanced in years as this fellow.

His, though, appeared to be brought on by overeating. He was a bit of a pig, especially when it was live worm night, and would eat himself into oblivion, then spend the next hour or two swimming upside down near the top of the tank until he was able to fishfart his way back to being upright.

(It took them a while to recognize when he had finally joined the fishafterlife, since they were used to him looking dead. Apparently REAL fish don't have eyes that look like little "x's" when they croak. ;))

The restaurant must be one screwed up place, though. After all, they've got their Dick in sling...

Update: The Fark folks have located a bigger story detailing the sick Dick. With a video. The fish is the size of a hand.

Elspode 04-28-2003 10:46 PM

The Yogic flyers video on that same site is good fun as well...and that is one big damn goldfish, indeed. You might even say that that restaurant has a really big Di...nevermind.

it looks like the handlers were having a hard time keeping their hands on the slick.... fish.
