February 19th, 2019: Marble Sculpture

Marble sculptures are pretty common in Italy and Greece, actually all around the Mediterranean.
Now marble is going to take a bit longer than something softer, say wood, but it’s the same thing.
You just take a big piece of rock and chip away everything that doesn’t look like what you want.

Holy shit. Francesco Queirolo chipped, “Il Disinganno” (Disillusion or Release from Deception), out of a hunk of marble in 7 years.

He probably had the advantage of some power tools but those things, while faster, cause heat and vibration, that’s bad for stone.
So how on earth did he do that without snapping those net strands? Light sabre? Divine intervention? Superglue?

I was always impressed with the ability to make a sculpture look like it was draped in gauze.

A lot of that depends on lighting too, but it’s still pretty damn impressive.

However Queirolo’s net draped figure tops them all in my book. :notworthy

It is hard to make a net out of rope, nice pliable, unbreakable rope.

Those are all pretty fuckin awesome.

That's remarkable.

What power tools were available in 1752?

I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.
He had a way with words as well.

That should have read powerful, meaning better quality chisels, hammers, files, and such. I need an editor. :haha:
