DSL

Earthlink is offering a pretty good deal on DSL right now. It's available where I live, and I already use their dial-up service. For those of you that have DSL, tell me if this sounds good:

--Downstream speed of up to 1.5 Mbps
--Upstream speed of up to 128Kbps
--8 email accounts
--Free ZoneAlarm personal firewall software
--20 hours of dial-up access per month
--Free equipment
--Free activation
--$29.95/mo for the first 6, then $49.95 thereafter. 1 year commitment.

The other question I have is: When I sign up for this, do I want a static IP. I'm suspecting no, but what do I know?

iDadalex 06-16-2003 12:05 AM

I have a local company where I live and Pay $62

I get 1.5mb/sec Up and Downstream
4 Email Addy's
Had to buy my Modem
Static IP

You only really need fast upstream and a static IP if you have a server of some sort.

Earthlink's deal doesnt seem to bad.

Sign up, ya retard. Just make sure you're gonna be living in the place for another year.

SteveDallas 06-16-2003 07:16 AM

Yeah, pricing sounds great. I'm paying $45/month for 768/128.

dave 06-16-2003 07:21 AM

SD, on the other hand, has the "Get Fucked In The Ass" deal. I also have that deal now, because I can't get better DSL at this current house, but I only pay $35 a month for it.

vsp 06-16-2003 08:34 AM

I have 1.5/128 DSL from Verizon for $34.95 a month.

Of course, I'm not actually _getting_ anything near 1.5 Mbps -- when they upgraded me from 768 to 1.5, my max throughput went from being in the low 80's to being in the high 80's... but my dad lives a mile and a half away and can't get DSL at all, so I'll take what I can get.

hot_pastrami 06-16-2003 10:41 AM

Until about a month ago I was paying $55/month for 640/256. Now I'm paying $40/month for 10mbit wireless up and down. Of course it never really goes that fast, but it does clip along pretty well, I usually see between 512k-1mb. In the middle of the night, anywhere up to about 5mb.

Odd_Bloke 06-16-2003 10:57 AM

We get 512/256 for £25-ish. :D You can do the math. :p

The fact that you don't know means no, you don't need a static IP :)

russotto 06-17-2003 12:14 PM

I'm paying $100 for 2 static IPs, 1536/384. Ouchie. But after all the trouble I went through to find a company which isn't going bankrupt, I'm not going to switch.

elSicomoro 06-17-2003 12:37 PM

I ordered it last night...it should be here next week. The real test, of course, is seeing if I'm competent enough to set it up.

dave 06-17-2003 01:08 PM

And the answer, of course, is "no". :)

Didn't you read the brochure?? You get lubricant with the extra $10/month.

My 1 year commitment is up in October--when I signed up, it was a good deal. (Verizon was at $30 for the 1st 3 months and $50 after... this deal with a local Verizon reseller was $45 per month, and since I use their SMTP server & not Verizon's I don't have to live with Verizon's interesting restrictions on outgoing email.) But I obviously need to shop around when my commitment ends.

elSicomoro 06-25-2003 08:15 PM

Let it be known that this is my first post on DSL. And I set it up all by myself.

(Suck it, Dave. :) )

Dude, you are never going to want to leave the house.

Just warning you.

Oh, and get yourself one of these.
