4/28/2006: Pig olympics

IotD has animal images every Friday. IotD is dedicated to bringing to light every shot of pigs involved in sport, especially swimming and diving.

Russia apparently has an annual pig olympics, and it was held last weekend with events for 12 piglets. The highlight seems to have been this "pigball" game where they coated the soccer ball with something tasty to get the pigs interested in it. See that's not right, the diving pigs seem to do that without any sort of treat assistance.

But they seem to enjoy it, so what the hell. Game on.

Apparently there were pigs from Russia, Ukraine and South Africa competing. This is a shame... so few nations... we need a true worldwide pig competition.

I bet they are having a blast. Pigs are very smart, sensitive, and enjoy getting out and doing social things. In fact I know they are having a great time... it is awesome to see them having so much fun when so few get to.
This made my day.

hey no fair..my Dad lied to me (this is also applicable to the "lies your parents told you" thread). We have potbellied pigs, and I wanted to see if they could swim but my Dad told me they couldn't swim, cos they would cut their throats with their front hooves. (are they called hooves? I know they're not paws!) next time i'm home i'm gonna throw them in the pond and see for myself ;)

there is something so immediately humourous about pigs, no other animal has that certain 'I don't know what' :D
these photos are fantastic.

Pigs enjoy swimming a great deal if let do it themselves... they will fear it if thrown in the first time.

You're watching Pig Olympics. On FOX!

I was only slightly serious about throwing them in - they weigh far too much for me to lift them! When we got them they were smaller than the pigs in the photos above, now (7 months later) they are at least 10 times bigger. its amazing how fast they grow. And they never stop eating. Once I found them asleep in the shed where we keep meal for cows. They had broken in earlier on and had obviously eventually passed out from sheer exhaustion- they were fit to burst!! I wish I had taken a photo....sorry I'm rambling, I tend to do that about them to everyone who will listen, but I love them so

Russian... Olympics...

Was there cheating and bribing of judges?

Elspode 04-28-2006 02:31 PM

No, but those female pigs are actually males.

Was the second pic taken in the slam dunk contest or something? Nice snout skills.

Decieving me with the title again UT. When you said pig olympics, I thought I would see some French people competing.

Non-threatening personality, I think. Of course that's because people don't realize how dangerous pigs can be. :smack:

Either this is simultaneously incredibly cute and more that a little surreal, or the Vicodin has finally begun to kick in.

It's because of Charlotte's Web and Babe, I think.

The ravenous pigs scene is really downplayed in the movie version of Hannibal.

Mostly, I think of pigs as being rather tasty.
