March 2, 2007: Friday queue clearing: two to eat, one to pet

This is a Giant Squid on a boat off Ogasawara Islands, Japan, on December 4, 2006. The squid was caught on special fishing line; it's about 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) long and about 50 kg (110 lbs), was caught at a depth of 650 meters (2132 feet) off the Islands.

The excitement over this beast is that it's the first one ever actually caught live, although it died. The real excitement is that this is a very small one. Apparently they grow to 20 meters long. North Korea should take to fishing these... one of them could be breakfast for the entire nation.

Comparatively underwhelming is this giant Philippine lobster, a species recently discovered in a developed Philippine-French joint project in the island of Panglao. I've seen 'regular' lobsters bigger than this, but we don't yet know what it tastes like with drawn butter and so the news is reported here in anticipation.

Finally, nobody's eating this one, although he does come with his own poaching equipment and broth. The official cap from Mainichi Daily News, Japan: Kurobe, a 10-year-old Labrador retriever with problems in his hind leg, receives a massage in a hot bath at 'El Perro', an aqua fitness centre for dogs, in Tokyo February 25, 2007. The fitness center offers physical training and weight loss programs and remedies for bone and sinew problems for dogs.

He looks happy, and I'm happy to think that that somewhere in the world there is an aqua fitness centre where dogs can get an Asian massage.

Does he get a happy ending? There, I said it so you don't have to. Happy Friday.

I was going to ask if the dog gets a full release. If only it were a plushie/furry cosplay massage joint...

Is this a test?

You managed to refer to both eating the dog, and giving it a 'happy ending'.

It's like you channelled into the collective souls of all potential responders.

That dog is cute...nice to see the wackies treating an animal well for once.

I missed this the first time round and couldn't understand your poaching equipment/ broth comment. It looked like ice to me - it still does a little, broken up slushy ice. I'm pleased he's being pampered and massaged rather than made into a dogsicle.

What with the lobster comments yesterday and a picture of a veritable feast today I am really in a seafood mood. I don't even think I have a can of tuna at home - let's hope it doesn't get so bad I have to start crunching on my cat's fishy treats

Does anyone else think that they are really preparing a huge bowl of dog soup?

With the picture of the lab - I can almost HEAR it - the bubbling water, and the dog making those low "happy dog" moans - "merrOwil - ooohhh, mumh"

You mean like the mini desserts at Friendly's? Oh, wait, there's a double entendre in there, isn't there?

Did you see the colossal squid caught in the Ross sea? 990lbs. Calamari the size of tractor tires.:eek2::drool:

The first pic. I love science and I love japanese culture, but I do not understand why the japanese has to kill everything they want to study. This Squid, an old Shark few weeks ago, the Whales they said they kill for study... I want to believe that it is possible to capture and study these beasts without killing them.
No PETA here, I just like animals.

Nice lobster. I will not add another rant about studying the animals alive, ok, well, I am ranting :smack:

The last photo is lovely. I love dogs. And I am happy to see they get a nice massage somewhere. A point for the japaneses.

PD: Brianna I know that could be boring, sorry. And I am worst yet at parties, so you are right.

btw: thanks xoxoxoBruce :3eye:

“The demand is intense, and so is the temptation,” said Hidekazu Kawanabe, one of the country’s top Chihuahua breeders. “There are a lot of bad breeders out there who see dogs as nothing more than an industrial product to make quick money.”
Bad breeders!! Why those damn dirty Japs.....that would never happen in the good old ethical USA, buy golly.:right:
