The Big Apple

Sometime in the next month I'm going to the Brooklyn Museum of Art to see an exhibit of stuff from Ancient Egypt. The plan is to take the train from Philadelphia to Penn Station and then the subway over to the museum. Any advice for subway newbies?

(I've been to New York before, but just Manhattan, and mostly the area around Lincoln Center. And always with my wife, who grew up in the NJ suburbs of NYC, and thus foolishly IMHO insists on actually driving into Manhattan.)

driving into Manhattan...wow.

As the resident New Yorker, I'll try and help you out. Brookyln isn't really my area of expertise, but I'll give it a shot.

You're coming into Penn Station. From there, the Q train services Brooklyn, but more to the point, it should take you to Flatbush Ave. Flatbush is the heart and soul of Brooklyn, and from there, you can get anywhere in the borough.

If this museum is the one I'm thinking of, it should be on Washington Ave., which is a few blocks from Flatbush. Even if I'm wrong, you can get directions easy.

Again, Brooklyn isn't my area of operations. I'm Gotti, I run around in Queens. But I hope this would point you in the right direction.

There is a major, announced subway stop right in front of the Brooklyn Museum. Really Easy to find. Have fun!

Thanks, I'll check it out.. I got that there was a stop there from the museum web site, but still was not clear. I finally tracked down the MTA(?) web site and got a map.. doesn't look hard.

Once more I head to New York, and once more it's for Egyptological purposes. Any advice on getting from Penn Station to the Metropolitan Museum? I'm leaning toward taking a cab, since I want to maximize time at the museum. (We're going to take SEPTA -> NJ Transit rather than Amtrak--it'll take approximately one hour longer each way, at a fare savings of about $125. We should have approximately six hours in New York, including time getting from the train station to the museum and back.) But I'm wondering if the bus is worthwhile--the Met's web site suggests the M4, which seems fine route-wise but also looks like it will take a while.

Any idea how long the lines at the museum will be? You're saving $125 between X people but if you run out of time you can always go back, right?

Grab that hedgehog vase for my DoDads collection, will ya?:D
