Mormons Celebrate!

South Park creators plan religious musical

Wednesday, 21st June 2006, 12:39

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - 'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are working on a Broadway musical - about Mormons.

The new show - which will be co-created by 'Avenue Q' writer Jeff Marx - is currently being developed by the comic duo but is yet to be given a title.

Marx told Bang Showbiz: "Trey and Matt were over with me in London recently while I open 'Q' here and so far we've written about four songs but we've got loads more ideas.

"The show is going to have nothing to do with their show, 'South Park', or my musical. It'll be something totally new and it's going to be something totally different.

He added: "It's going to be about Mormons and it's going to be really funny... we hope."

The 'South Park' creators are no strangers to poking fun at organized religion.

They most recently attacked former cast member Isaac Hayes and his Scientology beliefs.

The star's character, Chef, was depicted as a paedophile and killed off after he quit the cult animated show complaining that Parker and Stone actively promoted intolerance and bigotry.

It is believed his outrage stemmed from an episode aired last year which mocked fellow Scientologist Tom Cruise.

'Avenue Q' - which has recently opened in London's West End - is an adult-themed musical inspired by a number of puppet based children's TV shows, including 'Sesame Street'.

The Mormons have beaten them to the punch. It seems there are some talented and creative sheep in that flock.

Mrs Elspode and I have watched three different films by these folks, and have actually enjoyed them all, especially "Baptists at Our Barbeque". Good naturedly poking fun at themselves, yet still positive and "spiritual", without actually rubbing your nose in it. Check 'em out.

I'm surprised it didn't mention their movie Orgazmo, which has already poked fun at Mormons.

I KNEW there was one movie I forgot to mention in the Movies You've Seen But Most People Haven't thread.

I would say that Mr. Parker appears to have issues with Mormons from some of the dialogue in the movie.

Quote:

Joe Young: We're from The Church of Jesus Christ.
Old Lady: Oh, the Mormons?
Joe Young: That's right. I'm elder Young and this is elder White.
Old Lady: Well, you two boys can just f**k right off.
Joe Young: Ma'am?
Old Lady: You heard me. Take that book of Mormons and shove it so far up your righteous asses that you choke, you soul soliciting pigf***kers.
or this

Quote:

Joe Young: You see, when the Mormons first arrived, they didn't have any money...
Older Porn Star: They should've done DVDA.
Joe Young: DVDA?
Older Porn Star: Yeah, double-vaginal double-anal. It's the only way a woman of my age will get work in this industry. If you don't think that splits me open like a turkey on Thanksgiving, heh...
Stagehand: We're ready for the DVDA shot!
Older Porn Star: [smiles] Nice talkin' with ya, kid.

I'm pretty sure he comes from a Mormon family himself.

They make fun of everything equally. Mormons are just easy.
