Location Map Needed (UK)
 

I've been asked to create a map of all our pharmacies & GP surgeries (as two different PCTs are now merging, I'm sure Brits will know what I mean).

This will require not just finding a map but manually sticking pins in over 200 locations.

Does anyone know of an online way of doing this? None of the free maps I've found online have been capable of pinpointing multiple locations. And it does have to be free - this is the NHS where you can't spend a pound to purchase something that would save hours of work!

I don't know what license terms either of them have, though.

Back in the '80's I used to write digital mapping software for just this kind of appplication.... it were'nt free, though...

I know a lot of modern-day software will allow a certain amount of flagging, but I think you may be hitting the limits of the freebies.

On this side of the pond, programs such as MapsOnUS and MapQuest permitted you to build a URL that contained Latitutde, Longitude, and label. For each store, you would create a URL that would point to a location and with your label description. One URL for each store. Most difficult part was getting Latitude and Longitude correct.

So what happened? What solution finally developed?

None :(

I have explained to my Manager that the map will need hours of manual work and so have been given a stay of execution - I only need to plot the 56 pharmacies expressing an interest in providing emergency response.

It is a necessary task, not make-work, but it's going to take a while. I'm plotting pharmacies (so far) that are willing to provide emergency cover if parts of the city are evacuated. It's important because if all the pharmacies responding were on the South side of the city and the South side of the city was evacuated we'd have problems.

The most important thing people leave behind when they are evacuated (according to Government data) is their medication.

But it comes down to me with a spreadsheet of responses, an A-Z (this is not my home city) and a stack of pins. And the next stage involves the GP surgeries.

I have since learned that MapQuest program (that works given latitude and longitude) is also available for UK. Having Latitude and longitude for each store should make the task easiest.
