What we have here is a paid overseas spammer establishing an account and posting a first message to make their account seem legitimate.
The ISP of origin of the message: barak-online. You realize, if these folks just get a few degrees smarter... it will get scary. |

OK, I'm stupid. What is the spammer's goal? Do they use it to advertise or something, and this is their attempt at seeming legit? People can create evil out of just about anything! |
Let's say somebody new shows up and their first post is telling us how wonderful Acme(tm) Bail Bonds are. Obvious spam, no?
Well the theory is that if you join and ingratiate yourself to the community, they won't be so suspicious when you post your thinly veiled ad. The problem is for this to work, you have to make much more of an effort than people usually do--witness transparently lame attemps like this one. (DISCLAIMER: I have nothing to do with Acme(tm) Bail Bonds. Please don't interpret this post as a subtle attempt to advertise them. Of course if it was, it would be brilliant, and, as the culmination of 15-odd years of Cellar posting, not at all cost-effective.) (EDIT: Yikes! They exist. I was just trying to make something up.) |
Exactly. The Cellar registration is protected by a CAPTCHA, so automated scripts can't register. It has to be done by a human, so what they are apparently doing is hiring people overseas, for pennies, to create and register accounts.
This is leading to a lot of spam accounts with names like "linda jones" and such, obvious attempts at americanization -- and "ldhldhldhl", obvious keyboard spatters -- and "freeviagra1998".... We may eventually have to institute a policy where new accounts have their first (and or second?) messages moderated, so we can check the usual anti-spam filters. Or something. |
So canned responses to topics are next?

Let me take this opportunity to invite you all to try my product: Jumpin' Jelly Beans. If you like my beans, you can invest early and reap the profits later. I tell you, they're going to be BIG...bigger than pet rocks, maybe.
I used 1476 posts to catch you off guard. :p BTW, Steve, that is hilarious about the bail bonds company!:D |

I made that up too. In reality, I don't leave the house.
|
What house? You obviously live in tiny room in India with 15 other professional spammers.
|
Making pennies per hour.... or is it per day?
|
Well, yeah, but the room is in a house. And we get paid in pizza.
|
It must be cool to be a professional. Have you ever been named all-pro? What spamming team are you on? What number do you wear? I want your poster on my wall!
