Reading the story says more than I could.

Most telling is one of the final lines, almost an afterthought...

"Earlier on Wednesday 40 Nobel laureate scientists, including some of the country's leading genetic and cancer researchers, released a letter urging senators to support legislation that would allow therapeutic cloning."

Sometimes the US really, really is that different from Northern Europe.

and in other news, an entire industry left america and australia(similar thing is trying to pass here after one ultraconcervative senator (also staunch catholic) shot down a bipartisan comittee set up to investigate about it) today, heading for counties that aren't goverened by ultraconcervative religious bigots.

Cloning bans will move biotech out of the US, the CBDTPA (or whatever actually passes) will send high-tech running... the US is just setting itself up for a brain drain.

Galileo was also jailed for promoting science over morality. He demonstrated that the sun and planets did not revolve around the earth. Since a Pope was so religious and less intelligent, then laws were based upon morality rather than good science and logic.

A conservative, by definition, fears change. But we know mankind can only survive and grow if we keep changing. Moralists constantly fear innovation. It is why radioactive giant ants attacked Los Angles. Must be possible. I saw it on TV - logic be damned.

Hasn't the brain drain started already though? Doesn't the US offer special visas for overseas folks that are in various occupations, like medicine?

I defy you to find a dictionary that defines a conservative as a person who fears change.

YOu could claim that is implied by thier aparant aherance to traditional values which would be threatened by change... But i'm not going to.

That would be inward movement. If Congress and Bush ban a huge area of biotech, it'll be outward movement.

Sorry Russotto. I was thinking of the general idea of brain drain, rather than relating it to your post. My apologies. :)

A guy I know from Scotland is in the US to do research for a BBC show on a brain drain from the UK to the US. It became impossible for an animal research outfit over there so they moved to the US. I guess they figure Bushs war on terror will control ELF ALF and PETA.
