It's not split across servers yet - what you saw was the end of the bottleneck. It's like a highway that can handle 50,000 cars per hour -- 50,000 and they drive fast and get there fast, 50,001 and they back up and all cars have to wait.

It's split now. And the results are good so far: we are still getting a lot of hits today, but not so much slowness. We'll only know the real result after the next major crush.

I'm not surprised at the crush. I've seen articles about that cave at least a dozen times and not one of them had decent pictures. Once they were up, the word doesn't take long to get to gurus like Fark & Boing and co-ops like Stumble & Digg. :smack:
