Young people in my town--stay or go?

My town . . . is kinda fucked up.

It's in the middle of nowhere; it has traditionally and currently a very poor population. People talk about getting away, but few actually do. Here's an article which talks about the young people in El Paso foregoing moving out of town for better careers, choosing instead to remain with their families:

Even those that grumble the most, and do manage to escape . . . usually come back. Why? Because of family. Because of the quality of life here, the relaxed pace.

The enchiladas.

Okay . . . my town isn't too bad after all.

That's interesting.

My fiance always used to complain bitterly about his rural hometown, but now that we live together in "the big city" we both miss it a lot. Either it's harder to appreciate it when it's all you know, or it's easier to romanticize it when you're not there! :p

"The grass is always greener"?

I always hate wherever I am unless it's very short-term. More than 3-4 days in one place and I'm ready to move on.

I have some good friends that just moved from small towns. Some of them like it in the more liberal big city atmosphere but others hate it. Depends on the person.

my last girlfriend lived in el paso with her ex-husband, who worked across the border. despite her love of spanish/latin culture, she hated living there. said it was quaint at times, but otherwise not pleasant. lack of jobs, poor economic outlook ...

so they bought a VW bus, drove around Mexico for six months and then pointed themselves at new york city, where they promptly separated and she moved on to destroy my life.

I've tried to leave twice, and got sucked back in...I guess I'm meant to stay here. Not that I mind...I actually like it here now. :)
