Leftovers

I know it's not just an American thing, but I love leftovers. Sometimes foods left overnight just taste different when reheated.

For lunch I'm having Jambalaya rice from Friday, and turkey sausage and samosas from last night. The sausages and samosas were made on the grill and kept sealed overnight, so I'm expecting the smoky flavor to seep in.

A lot of cultures like twice cooked foods. Refried beans and twice baked potatoes come to mind.

And for some reason pizza tastes better when left in the refrigerator overnight and reheated in the oven until the sauce becomes a paste and the edges of each slice start turning black. :yum:

I love leftovers.

I will change them slightly...like add some curry to leftover casserole, or batter then pan fry chunks of roasted meat.

But yeah, flavours definitely change/enhance in some dishes and its just devine.

Left over fried chicken is the Best the NEXT day !!!

Lasagne is always better after it's been cooked, cooled and then reheated. Specially if you like it really cheesey. The cheese seems to settle a little and things just taste better.

Leftover oatmeal, cut in thinnish slices out of the saucepan with a spatula, fried over fairly high heat in butter, served with syrup.

That sounds lovely UG.

EXACTLY what I was going to say!

In fact, I deliberately cook huge batches of lasagna and put them in the deep freezer to be taken out at a later date and reheated. I never serve it fresh from the oven.

Leftovers are a regular part of my diet, so much so that I tend to forget I'm eating leftovers. I cook batches of different dishes on the weekend so that I don't have to worry about making my lunches during the week. That's one of the reasons I like stews and casseroles so much - not just easy to make, but great and simple as leftovers.

I live on leftovers for work. I do 24 and 48 hour shifts and usually plan in meals from home so I don't have to eat in the cafcryteria or order out. I eat much better than most do at work.

Yes but why does that sound so yummy?

Maybe it's the fact that an urbane guerrilla is pan gently pan frying oatmeal.:P

Leftovers??? walks away scratching head

April makes a killer lasagna that I enjoy more as leftovers.

I can't stand the pizza at the place where I work, but I like it lukewarm or cold.

elSicomoro 08-06-2007 08:34 PM

Oh...french fries are almost never good leftover, IMO...they taste like shit cold, and don't taste so hot re-heated.

DucksNuts 08-06-2007 08:52 PM

Oh yeah, chips (fries) are the pits cold....even left in their bag for too long and soggy they are crap.

I'm having left over gnocchi pasta bake for lunch, it was super last nite, so I am hoping it will be yummo for lunch.

Urbane Guerrilla 08-09-2007 11:23 PM

Yeah, the only deep-fried stuff that tastes good cold is fried chicken. Fried veggies that way must be taken hot. Hot lipids rule!

Frying gently'll get 'em hot -- this is sometimes called oatmeal scrapple -- but a hot frying pan gives them a bit of crispiness that adds to the dish. Butter flavor is essential; don't use a light-flavor or no-flavor oil.
