yes, no, ooh missus.

After the rampant issue of double entendres in the thread on a roof top box for the car, i thought some dwellars might enjoy some Frankie Howerd.

I was recently directed to a site where of tv shows and movies, inclusing a lot of old British tv stuff.

Here is Up Pompeii with Frankie at his best.
One of IMDB's reviews is "The satire may be more juvenile than Juvenal, but "Up, Pompeii" remains a classic bit of English gutter subversion., "
Spot on

On that site also "Allo Allo", a comedy about Nazi occupied France,:) (you'd never get this on US tv ;) ) more double and single entendres, and cliche'd steretyped characters than you can shake a sausage at.

also a classic old piece of very British TV 'Dads Army', not so much smutty humour here.
used the catch phrase "Don't Panic" before Douglas Adams.

I like 'em YMMV

A man who runs his own business, having affairs with his workers, lying, cheating, and stealing, and his wife never knows?

Sounds like the Clinton White House...

But where are the flashing bedknobs???

To be fair, "Allo Allo" equally makes fun of the French, Germans, and English.

BTW, while BBC has some very good programming, even before "Hogan's Heros", we had "Sgt. Bilko", the best military comedy TV program ever, in any country. There are a lot of fine British comedies, and lately, with US programming being saturated with "reality" programming, BBC TV is looking better and better. However, if we go back to the Golden Age of television, the top bananas we had on screen (Gleason, Silvers, Caeser, Ball) and the writers backing them (Brooks, Reiner, Simon) blew away anything offered on the other side of the pond.

Of course Britain does have guys like Rowan Atkinson who are absolutely brilliant.

It was superb. But....personally I think Blackadder Goes Forth is the best military comedy.

M*A*S*H

DanaC 08-06-2007 07:09 AM

Oh....I stand corrected. You are of course completely correct Griff. M*A*S*H is obviously the best military comedy of all time.

Crimson Ghost 08-07-2007 01:58 AM

After a certain point, M*A*S*H became more of a "dramedy".

"Blackadder Goes Fourth", "Sgt. Bilko", "'Allo 'Allo", even "Dad's Army" were comedies all the way thru. I would rank them higher than M*A*S*H.

I love Alan Alda. M*A*S*H was what I watched while waiting for my dad to come home from 2nd shift while I was growing up.

His book titled Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is absolutely awesome. I respect him very much as a person now, instead of just a brilliant actor after reading it recently on vacation.

When I was in HS I had a huge crush on Alan Alda. I was a senior when the last show aired, and a bunch of us kids went to our history teacher's house for a MASH party. Anyway, my best friend at the time (she was kinda ditzy) wrote to Alda's agency (William Morris) and asked if he would come to my birthday party! I never heard about it and she never told me but some months later I got a big envelope from the agency (or, I think it said Universal studio or something.) I thought I was discovered! I opened it up and there was a pic of AA with the signature: To Shawnee (only my real name), Peace! Alan Alda.

I screamed like a teenager! In retrospect, he may not have signed it himself, but he seems like he would.

Clodfobble 08-07-2007 02:04 PM

Do you still have the picture, Shawnee?

Shawnee123 08-07-2007 02:15 PM

I do, somewhere. I've moved way too many times in the past few years! :o

We have BBC America, and our local PBS station has Britcom Saturday night. Has anyone ever seen Father Ted? I gave the complete Black Adder to my wife for our last anniversary.

DanaC 08-07-2007 06:45 PM

Father Ted! What a great show. Such a shame he died, he was comedy gold.

DanaC 08-07-2007 06:45 PM

Don't suppose you get Smack the Pony on there do you? Or Nighty-Night?

Weird Harold 08-08-2007 05:45 AM

No. That sounds more like something that would be on pay per view. During their pledge drives you get to vote on what they are going to buy, and show next, I'll see what I can do.
