Sleep
I woke up this morning at 8:54 am. My class was at 9. I freaked out, jumped out of bed, cursed myself for turning off both my alarms at 8 and 8:11 and went back to sleep. Now I put on a shirt, grabbed my shit and speed walked to the bus stop, to arrive just under 20 minutes late to class.
:greenface Last semester I got 8 hours of sleep every week night. 2am-10am. I had an 11am everyday during the week. This week I have 2 8ams, 2 9ams and a 10am and am used to turning in much later than what I should to get 8 hours of sleep. Anyone have sleep scheduling advice? Not only do I struggle to stay awake in nearly every class but I'm never tired late at nite which perpetuates this unhealthy sleep cycle. Old farts, how did you guys do it way back when. :D |
old fart reporting :)
I think maybe to do what you did last semester and schedule late classes. I've always been an early riser and the only thing getting older does for me is reduce my total hours of sleep needed. Like I can still get to bed at 12 and get up at 6 am. I think it is just the blessing/curse of youth to want to be up all night. I guess don't have any other good advice fresh. I just wanted to chat with you. :) |
Try and schedule later classes...like sky said....
I'm also a big big fan of power naps between classes, I don't sleep right at all anymore though so maybe I'm not the best person to take advice from :D |
What do you do when you go to sleep at 2am?
Do you have a routine? Do you have something that is your trigger that it is sleep time? To get up at 8, you only need to be going to sleep at midnite, that shouldnt be too hard, its just an adjustment of 2 hours. Most of the fact that you cant sleep earlier in the nite will be in your head, just start your wind down routine a bit earlier. Read a book, do some homework, they are usually guaranteed to make you sleepy. Stop doing anything mentally stimulating an hour before you should be going to bed, like, 11pm. I used to work shift work, try getting off going from getting up at 4.00am one week to getting home from work at 6am the next week. :D Back in those days, I used to be able to sleep no problems, just laid down and I was out cold. Now, its drug induced or nothing. |
Fresh, sleep is one of the things that you have consider very precious in college or you have to give it up. One of my teachers last year told the class "In college, there are three things you can do, school, sleep, or social life, but unfortunately, there is only time for two." I have found this to be mostly true.
My earliest class starts at 9:00 every day and assuming I get up at around 7:30-8:00, I try to go to bed around 1 or 2 in the morning and try to get 5-6 hours a night with one night getting around 7 or 8. I gave up on the idea of getting a definite sleep schedule and that has worked out for me and the only setback is being tired at relaxing times of the day. If you do not want to build a definite sleep schedule slowly get less and less sleep every week and you should get used to it, without a lower in performance. You will learn to get a second wind on staying up as well. If you get deprived of sleep you also fall asleep right away which is a plus. If you are looking for a definite sleep schedule (my roommate did that last year), routine is a big thing. Try to do the same thing every night before you go to bed and try to wake up at the same time every morning. If you want help getting on a schedule I would try drinking chamomile tea or taking sleeping pills, those work but dependency is another issue. I would make that decision as early as possible because later in the semester you may be pressured to choose friends and school over sleep, I'm sure it has happened already, so be ready to give up one of them unless you have excellent time management. |
In college, you can also sleep in on the weekends to make up for lost sleep during the week. I kind of miss that.

Go to sleep earlier or take a nap in the afternoon.
I mean--it's not all that hard, but you have to train yourself. A regular routine is best. |
For me, a regular routine helps along with very little caffeine. I'm normally in bed no later than 2am and up no later than 10am. Unfortunately, I can only sleep for about 7 or so hours at a time. My bed is too firm and it totally fucks with my back.

Get a waffle pad! They're like $15 at Wal-Mart or Target, and make any bed soft and comfortable.

Uh, sex makes you sleepy.
Try that. |
Not me, sex makes me bouncy.
|
Maybe sex just makes guys sleepy?
It makes me both sleepy and hungry. Nothing beats a good shag, a meatball parm sub, and a nap. In that order preferably. |
Ahhh, you have the taste.....
|
You ever need an excuse as to why you fall asleep after sex? Because of science!
