Driver fined for smoking in lorry

A dog warden spotted King smoking and flicking the stub out of the lorry's window. He also received a fine for depositing litter with the stub.

Magistrates were told that the council warden took the number of the lorry, on Colwyn Bay promenade, and it was traced to a carrier firm, who confirmed their vehicles had no-smoking notices.

A solicitor for Conwy council said King was offered a fixed penalty for smoking illegally in his cab and another for £75 for depositing litter with the stub.

He has paid the litter fine but has not paid the one for smoking.

King did not attend the hearing but wrote pleading guilty. He offered no mitigation.

He was fined £75 and must also pay £30 investigative costs and £65 legal costs.

The lorry driver must also pay a £15 victim's surcharge, which is a flat-rate levy paid into a fund to improve services for victims of crime.

Along with the £75 fine he had already paid, this means a total bill of £260.

Speaking after the hearing King criticised the council for taking him to court.
"I'm sure they can find better things to do with their time," he said.

Sometimes I wish more people over here would be fined for flicking cigarette butts out the window. They have caused a devastating amount of damage through bushfires.

You would think that if he was smoking in his cab and it's against policy then he'd get a warning or sacked from his job. That part of it is a bit weird to me.

I agree, there is no excuse for starting fires and littering.
It causes more damage than most can imagine here in FL.

The smoking in the workplace this seems a bit strong, but he clearly knew the rules so.....

No, no, cigarette butts immediately vanish when dropped. Except some which have to be stepped on for this to happen.

I detest such people. Smoke if you wish, since its your body, but put the butt somewhere appropriate.

Reminds me of the assholes round here who can't be bothered to bag up their leaves and grass cuttings, so they blow them into their neighbor's gardens and onto the road. I wonder what they think happens to them then? How freaking lazy is that? We get free collection of such compostibles. And these are the people who are surprised when the storm drains back up and overflow because they're full of rotting leaves etc. Wonder where in the hell those came from? Someone should do something about that....

Here were encouraged to rake or blow them into the gutter. The city comes by every couple of weeks and scrapes them up.

I smoke in my cab but unlike most, I do not flick the butt out...I use an ashtray. I'd hate to think that that wildfire I saw on TV which happened to occur just AFTER I passed through that area might have been caused by my carelessness.

we rake them into the street on set days -2 collections a year.
