Folk dancing
I remember as a child in elementary school doing a lot of square dancing and folk dancing. Greek dancing, Israeli dancing--stuff like that, often at spring or annual festivals for an audience; sometimes just for P.E. Culminating in an elaborate set of Maori dances complete with poi and throwing sticks in 6th grade (as well as that aforementioned maypole).
It was kind of fun. Did anyone else do this? And, it seems like they don't do it anymore. I wonder how come? |
Square dancing, yes, and some kind of thing where people hold the ends of two bamboo poles, and move them rhythmically, and you have to sort of hop-step-skip over and through them. Kinda like jump rope without the rope, I guess. It was supposed to be some kind of indigenous thing.

I think that's Chinese Jumprope.

My sister was really into contra dancing as an adult a few years ago, which is basically the same thing. There are lots of active contra dancing communities out there. I bet you could go dancing this weekend if you wanted to. |

That explains a lot. |

interesting. I really have no urgent desire to go out folk dancing; I prefer belly dance, which I suppose could be classified as folk dancing. I was just waxing nostalgic . . .
