So I'm trying to make some $$$...

...and my boss wants me to build a website for the shop. How much would a wet-behind-the-ears web developer charge? I'm not going to charge him even that, but I'm trying to figure out what would be reasonable.

I think the price is determined the same way that price is determined for "art." That is, how much have they got/How much are they willing to part with/How much have you convinced them it's worth?

I guess I should look at what St. Louis-area developers charge. I have some web-developing skills, but I'm no CSS wizard. It's going to be a pretty simple website...just a few graphics, our menu and our contact info.

Trying to make money?

Hmm ... I thought counterfeiting was illegal but OK then ...

:D

Yeah it depends on exactly how much site they want.

$10000 Original, classy new design rolling out with new marketing, website a part of the strategy, online ordering system with customer database and email strategy, back-end administration so they can change items and prices themselves, ease of integration with other online services

$3000 Strong design closely matching the shop's existing marketing, online ordering system, back-end administration

$1000 Simple design basically matching the shop, back-end administration

$500 Simple design basically matching the shop

$300 Simple design with a picture of the shop on the home page

$30: put up a PDF of the menu and nothing else

If you're not actually bringing visual design skills to it, just getting it online, I'd just base it on an hourly thing. Figure out how long you're going to reasonably need to work on it, and charge him like $50 an hour.

This website will give you an idea of what the market is going for.

As long as "by the market" you understand that means people in foreign countries often working for less than minimum wage.
