Early dwellar noticed being successful

David Sklar was a part of us when he was a wee lad. He was really funny and wrote well. Now he's written two books on the PHP language for O'Reilly. I just bought the second one. Well done sir, can you help find me a good job doing PHP?

DanaC 03-10-2009 01:35 PM

That's wonderful :) Shame he isn't still around here, he sounds an interesting guy.

SteveDallas 03-10-2009 02:29 PM

Wow, that's great! UT, have you let him know that The Cellar is here?

(For those non-geeks in the audience, O'Reilly is one of the premiere (perhaps THE premiere) publishing houses for books about open source-ish programming and systems administration subjects. To give you an idea, I at this moment have 18 of their books on my shelf.)

I've got a growing stack of their Make magazine.

Undertoad 03-10-2009 03:10 PM

I just found his blog and notified him of our presence.

Early Dwellar Patri Friedman was a strong member in the 90s, played roller hockey with us, and is the grandson of Milton Friedman. He is now leader of The Seasteading Institute, a group which seeks to found new nations on created islands on the ocean.

neat - BTW, whatever happened to the hockey?

Undertoad 04-10-2009 03:13 PM

We lost.

SteveDallas 04-10-2009 08:20 PM

For those who missed it, there are hockey photos.

DanaC 04-12-2009 07:09 AM

Oh I've heard about that seasteading project! Fascinating stuff.

Undertoad 08-16-2011 02:59 PM

Patri Friedman has gotten a boost in funding and is planning an office park off the coast of San Francisco soon.

My guess: safe harbor a few miles off the coastland used to be safe harbor for pirate radio. Patri's first client will someone like The Pirate Bay, for Internet players tired of fighting various governments.

TheMercenary 08-21-2011 08:26 AM

That whole pirate radio thing was fascinating.
