Implicit Association Tests

I'm not a racist, a bigot or homophobe. At least, not as far as I know.

Have you taken an Implicit Association Test?

MaggieL 08-16-2002 02:40 PM

Well, I tried. :-)

I ran a test and then the applet hung at what seemed like it was supposed to be the end of the test, presumably it was reporting the raw data back to the mother ship and waiting for a score. The testing technique is very interesting...caused me some serious moments of cognitive dissonance there. You can tell when you hesitate, and laugh, your muscles seem to wanna go one way and your brain the other.

Very interesting....thanks for the link. I'll try other tests again later and see if it works any better, I'm curious to see the interpretation scores. The contents of the Java Log in your borwser reveal the test stimuli, a summary of the responses and your average latency.

I have edited the link to another source of the same test, which might work better.

rather than starting a new thread, i thought i would just bring this one back to the surface.

soooo, does anyone care to test their bias?

xoxoxoBruce 07-19-2005 06:21 PM

There's no test for Americans. :bitching:

lookout123 07-19-2005 06:30 PM

well, i'm sure that some learned individual can tell me why i'm wrong, but i think the test is pure BS. i won't say which one i took or what the complaint is until after others have done it. but after reading through the FAQs and finding out how it is scored i think it is a load of crap. that being said... the test reveals that i spend my time perfecting my noosemaking skills and waiting for blacks to roam within my view so i can lynch them. or something to that effect.

Clodfobble 07-19-2005 06:52 PM

I slightly prefer young people to old people, slightly prefer thin people to fat people, and strongly associate "white" faces as "American" over Asian faces. Meh. I didn't have the patience to take any others.

xoB, the default test (Demonstration button) is the test for Americans. Non-Americans can choose from the short list below of flags representing the countries...

l123:

I took the topmost test, the age ait (young-old) test. The results indicated that I had a strong preference for Young. That matches my self reporting on the post test 0-10 low-high affinity for old:7 young:10. I like kids, I have kids, been a coach, tutor, scout leader, uncle, big brother, etc, etc,. Kids are the future, and I like 'em. I also revere my elders. The matriarch of my bible study is celebrating her 80th birthday next month, (she's a kick, and a newlywed -- 3 years). I feel I have much (much) to learn from them, and I owe them much. They built this country I love, invented the stuff I use, not to mention raised me from a babe.

I feel the (ONE) test I took reported an accurate result. I'll have to take more to see if I jive with their methods. I agree about the cognitive dissonance thang.

lookout123 07-19-2005 07:11 PM

i've now taken five tests and they have all come up with "no preference" except for the first one.
although, two of them did tell me that society has probably taught me not to have a preference.

BigV 07-19-2005 07:15 PM

Presidential task: slight preference of Bill Clinton to George Bush.

Having taken two tests now I am more comfortable with the mode. I think it does have merit. I found myself tripping up in this last test. I frequently got the wrong answer when I automatically associated the feeling with the wrong face. I actually laughed out loud, it is an interesting test. Try it.

BigV 07-19-2005 07:16 PM

I think it helps to take the test at the highest possible speed, practically NOT reading, but trusting the force, Luke.

lookout123 07-19-2005 07:17 PM

see my problem is that i'm not fighting initial instincts, i'm fighting muscle memory.

if answer A was my left finger before, my body is fighting that.

wolf 07-20-2005 12:28 AM

There must have been another thread on this somewhere, because I know I took the tests.

(and yes, as it happens I show a slight preference for pattern matching in the way they trained me to do it initially. Oooh. Science. Ish.)

staceyv 07-24-2005 05:22 PM

That test was dumb! If they switched the order around, it would appear that people liked African Americans better. The first half of the test had us associate them with bad words/ideas. For a second, I almost felt like I was being brainwashed to associate black people with agony, hurt, fear, etc.
Stupid.
