Earth Hour

ya gonna do it?

Turn out the lights tomorrow at 8:30 pm for one hour. That's not only lights, but unplug all the standby stuff, the phone, etc.

I guess I better stock up on candles and bring out my guitar.

I'll be pissed if the lights go out right when I'm lining up a free kick.

Beestie 03-27-2009 01:24 PM

I'll turn off the lights. But I don't think it'll be for an hour. I have two little kids. An hour without electricity and either their heads will explode or they'll see to it that mine does.

TheMercenary 03-27-2009 01:28 PM

Maybe you could just flip them on and off once. That has to count somehow. :)

glatt 03-27-2009 01:48 PM

I hope my kids don't get wind of this, or they will nag me to do it. Easy for them, it's past their bedtime. I'll celebrate it two hours later.

I think its a great thing for those who aren't conscious enough or need the little extra impetus. I do all I can - that particular hour will be no different. I wholeheartedly endorse this to be a daily event. Do it every day and make a difference.

Maybe I will turn out the lights and stuff and go out to eat. That would count. Sort of.

Shawnee123 03-27-2009 03:12 PM

Who schedules a freaking earth hour on prime-time Saturday night?

I might do this though. I always have candles going anyway.

Sounds like it's intended to communicate without debate that the use of any form of energy is by default bad for the entire planet.

Oh, no, the website encourages you to take videos of the event and upload them to Youtube, live-blog the event, etc.

The power to do all that = yeeah, about 10 compact fluorescents for an hour...

It's like when they held the global warming summit in Bali... thus ensuring that almost every attendee and the press would fly halfway around the world on private jets...

I couldn't understand that. What about the energy used for videos and computer time, etc. Seems like it would off set any gains.

Power generation is done on demand anyway. The real question is will the power companies cut back on the fuel they burn if this is done by a lot of people. I'm skeptical. I bet it'll just be wasted power during that hour.

Undertoad 03-27-2009 03:41 PM

99.9%* of candles are made of paraffin wax, a... wait for it... wait for it..... petroleum product.

* this is my estimate only. Wikipedia only says "most candles" but that did not have the effect I needed, and besides, you know I'm right.

Shawnee123 03-27-2009 03:42 PM

Eh fuggit. It cuts into pron time anyway.

classicman 03-27-2009 03:47 PM

glatt *strikes again!

edit * and UT and Shawnee
