Is this good or bad?

Why do I get the feeling that a constant, low decibel level recording of "The power of Christ compels you" is going to be played in each room?

Texas Christian University

The church-affiliated Texas Christian University has announced plans to allocate apartment housing on its Fort Worth campus for homosexual students and their supporters.

According to a report in the city's Star-Telegram newspaper, the school plans to open a section of the Tom Brown-Pete Wright apartments for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender students and allies."

The school also will have two living groups that are designated "Christian-based" and others for fine arts and other themes, the report said.

"It's a chance for students to be part of a unique experience," David Cooper, associate chief of residential life, told the newspaper.

Shelly Newkirk, a TCU sophomore who applied to create the homosexual residence lifestyle, told the newspaper her vision is that homosexuals and straight students will interact and hang out.

Cooper said the university opened its "living-learning communities" to student ideas.

Others coming up include the "Leadership and Strengths Community" for those who want to lead, environmentalists who are collecting in the "Green House" and the Health and Wellness Community.

"I think it's wonderful that TCU is offering this," Nancy Tubbs of the LGBT Resource Center at the University of California-Riverside told the paper.

The report said a fraternity for homosexuals opened at the University of North Texas in 1998 but lasted only a few years before closing.

On the paper's forum page, the reaction ranged widely.

"So let me get this straight. TCU now supports segregation?" wrote one contributor.

"Some of you will no doubt be SHOCKED to learn that 'Christian' does not necessarily mean 'anti-gay.' TCU is affiliated with the Christain (sic) Church (Disciples of Christ), a denomination that does not have anti-gay policies. … I'm just glad that some are trying to turn 'Christian' back into a term for love rather than the curse word that so many of you have caused it to be," said another.

Yet another was terse: "sick."

Yeah, it seems suspicious. Shel, what do you think? Do you think cordoning off "teh gheys" will be good or bad?

If it is optional, there shouldn't be a problem. Here at UofM we have a separate dormitory section for LGBTA students and many other groups and I have not heard of any problems with that since everyone seems to be happy with the setup.

You can make both valid positive and negative arguments for this though.

Initial impression is not to trust the Christians; but I couldn't say what their twisted, mind-ƒunk angle is, for sure.

Given my Catholic background, I'm with Sheldon.

I think it just says "Gays are different and need to be in their own place, not all mixed in with us."

Shawnee123 04-10-2009 09:21 AM

That's kind of what I thought...certainly not the direction I would like to see.

sugarpop 04-10-2009 09:28 AM

I think if they are given the option to stay in quarters with "straight" students, then it's OK. If, however, they are trying to segregate the whole community, then I would say it's a step backwards. The point is, they should have a CHOICE.

classicman 04-10-2009 12:45 PM

I :cough: agree with sugar. :faint: If EVERYONE has a choice I think its fine. Why not give people with like interests the option.

Shawnee123 04-10-2009 01:10 PM

Well, I think it has to be a choice. It's not like the admissions office says "So, tell me, are you gay? Yes? Right this way please, we have a special spot for you."

Don't ask don't tell as it pertains to higher education?

Clodfobble 04-10-2009 05:21 PM

How many openly gay students do you really think attend Texas Christian University in the first place?

Elspode 04-10-2009 07:02 PM

Hey, if they play their cards right, the entire student population will be gay within a couple of semesters. Sedition must occur from the inside. Think about it...most Christian points of view decry gays teaching children, gays raising children, gays being accepted in society in any way. If gay people are truly that dangerous, then TCU will end up as the first all gay university in America.

I say give the bigoted SOB's their worst fear and gay them all up. At worst, the decor on the campus will eventually be fabulous.

I am so sick of anti gay propaganda and discrimination. I can't believe that this nation still manages to work up laws to discriminate against a certain type of individual. Its no better than it was when The Man was down on African Americans. Pfft.

sugarpop 04-10-2009 07:09 PM

I think they are already pretty gayed up. Honestly, with all the republicans in office and ministers being caught with their pants down with members of the same sex, many of whom were being PAID for their services, they really don't much validity when they spout off about gay issues, or family values.
