Bird Eating Spider

Hi All,

This slashdot post got me wondering if there are bird eating spiders.

http://science.slashdot.org/article..../05/07/1533231

and sure enough I found these gems:

I'd like to place an order: 10,000 of those birds please. However, those gigantic freaking spiders can stay wherever it is they live.

Wait...the spider is eating the bird? I thought it was a "bird eating (a) spider" not a "bird-eating spider" until I read the link. Oh hell...eff that! :bolt:

That's in one of the image threads Skateboard (not that I expect you to check the hundreds of pages!)

Wanna know a really scary thing?
Aussies think that sort of thing is normal.
Tip: never get into a household pest conversation with an Aussie. Half their indigenous wildlife is poisonous and the other half can maim you in some way.

Sundae, I searched "spider" and didn't find it. I must say I was surprised it hadn't been posted already. My bad.
:-)

I remember the praying mantis killing the hummingbird, but not a spider.

Didn't Ali post something about these giant spiders or maybe it was an IotD?

Yeah.....that's probably 'cause you used the 'search' function. Has anybody ever successfully found anything they were looking for using the search?

We did have a thread about 'golden orb spiders' which grow large enough to like birds as prey, and my part in the thread started with me saying that I have some of those in my garden. Most people do, and that they're quite common, although in the smaller form. They mostly only grow really large in tropical areas.

SG, we have plenty of cute cuddly marsupials for those of you not keen on the scarier wildlife. ;)

This is the thread

Merc, do you reckon those are camel spiders? Or just nightmares come to life?

Camel spiders. A lot of troops brought home pics of them after Desert Storm 1.

I seem to remember a warning in the cute marsupials thread (giving water to koalas) that they can cut you to the bone... Face it, Ali - Australia is out to get you.

Seriously, I was considering coming for a visit, back when I had 'net friends there...until I realized that it's all full of evil, evil deadly things
