Fruit Labels

They tell more than what the cashier should charge
Quote:

Just by looking at the label one can find out how the fruit is grown. For example an organic fruit contains a five-digit numeral starting with 9 (eg. 98045). In the same way the conventionally grown fruits will be labeled with a four-digit number (for eg. 4590) and genetically engineered fruits with five-digit number beginning with 8 (87590). So when you go for shopping next time do not forget to note down whether the fruit is created organically or conventionally or genetically engineered.

I knew about the 9, didn't know about the 8.

The link is to an Australian firm.
Is this coding an international one ?

They talk about the FDA.
Is this Australian FDA or US FDA or ... ?

footfootfoot 09-23-2010 04:56 PM

The coding is in effect here in the US

Fruit and vege are pretty well labled in the major supermarkets over here as to the origin and status as far as being organic goes, but I didn't know about the numbers. Thanks Bruce.

That's good to know. I wouldn't want to accidentally eat some organic banana.

is that a euphemism for cock?

My grocery store must not sell any GMO produce. I've never seen a code starting with 8, and I look at all the numbers because I weigh and tag my own stuff.

skysidhe 10-07-2010 08:38 AM

oh great. I am already a label reader, now I'm going to be inspecting the fruit. I'll be looking for those 8's.

I knew about the 4 and the 9.
