Why do 90% of conversations involving my wife's mother result in an argument?

I mean besides the fact that my wife hates her mother and is angry at her and yet is terrified of that fact.

Because you're not allowed to shoot her.

What, are you drunk? Why would you not run from the room when a conversation like that begins?

You're not making the mistake of taking your mother-in-law's side, are you? Or even seeming to?

People in close family relationships are generally allowed to insult, berate, and abuse one another, but when someone from the outside does so, they band together and fiercely defend one another from attacks.

It's probably like that.

I like to think that my MIL is just evil and that by merely mentioning her invokes all the evil that she represents.

Sort of like saying Beetlejuice (not Betelgeuse) three times.

Foot have you read People of the Lie, by M Scott Peck?
He has some interesting thoughts on evil... might even have mentioned your MIL specifically...

Some excerpts.
