There ought to be a better way....

to secure a toilet to the floor/flange/waste pipe. The whole wax ring, bolts that have to fed up through holes in the toilet system sucks.

they can send a man to the moon...

The way the seats attach isn't much better. You have to have Edward Plierhands to get in there.

Fernco wax free toilet seal

Doesn't work well on old cast iron though. Too rough.

Waste goes out the back in the UK. Totally different fixings. We were somewhat surprised the first time we had to deal with this here. Wax? Seems like something they might have used on the ark! We used those wax-free jobbies, seem to have done the trick so far.....

I recently re-tiled my bathroom, which made the floor almost an inch thicker. At the hardware store they told me to stack two wax rings to fill the gap. It's like putting a second o-ring on the space shuttle.

I'm awaiting calamity.

The old waste pipe ended at the plywood subfloor. I had to build up the tile so it would be at the same level as hardwood floors that we were getting put in in the hallway. This meant that the toilet, sitting on the tile, wouldn't quite reach a single wax ring, so I had to stack a second one on top, kind of like a double cheeseburger.

you sure do paint a picture, HLJ.

plthijinx 03-29-2011 06:31 PM

oh ok. but you made it work then? only other alternative is bust up tile, concrete and pipe to extend the flange.

HLJ there is a Kit you can get at Lowes for that there are 1/8" 1/4" and i think like 3/8" spacers , gaskets and all
you line up the spacer with the old ring , drive a screw Thru the Old pvc ring raiseing the new ring up to floor height ,
then install as per normal

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind if it starts leaking.
