Doing Hard Time

Every year, the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) pedals through towns across Iowa. Some children in Coralville, one of the ride's host towns, wanted to participate in the event by selling lemonade in front of their houses for a quarter per cup. Police celebrated their entrepreneurial spirit by promptly shutting down at least three lemonade stands for not obtaining $400 vendors' licenses and a health inspection.
It turns out that it's perfectly fine to operate a rogue lemonade stand in Coralville at any other time, but ordinances are stricter for a two-day period while the cyclists are in town. That doesn't mean that the police relished shutting down the stands, one operated by a four-year-old.
It was absolutely necessary, especially after testing revealed the presence of cooties.:p:

Hmm.. they're saying it is to prevent a rider from getting sick. It is much more likely they have a sports drink sponsor. You know that entrepreneurial fire people don't see in small towns anymore, that little girl just had her's snuffed out. Go regulators!

what total bullshit. total bullshit even if their purported reason is true--how is it more appropriate to protect the public health on those two days than the rest of the days? Why is it more important to protect the cyclists' health than the residents' health? Yeah. Bull. Shit.

By the way, it happens in Seattle too. Here's a picture of my BD just before she got arrested!

What is a bd and why were you filming the arrest?

Sundae 08-05-2011 12:24 PM

Beloved Daughter.
Don't all Dads take a photo of their daughter's first arrest?

Luckily, mine for for soliciting, so I was all dressed up.

BigV 08-05-2011 01:33 PM

Sorry, having a joke at the Iowa cops expense. BD was not arrested, the cop was a customer, not a tool of the oppressive police state.

When I watched the video of the little girl in Iowa, it reminded me of this shot of my BD. She was a little older than 4, but not by much. But similar blond hair, she has a pink chair instead of a pink table, both of them super cute. I think lemonade was going for a dime a cup at the time. She made bank too. We took her money and she bought a doodad, gimcrack, whatever, some toy. The lesson stuck too. She's a go-getter, having just landed her first professional job in the field of her college study. I'm super duper proud of her!

Ohhhh. Got it.

That's adorable and a great story. And good on the cop!

(gazes into the sky, wistfully) I'll never forget my first arrest. I'd just about made off with the crack money and was halfway home to the lab, when the cops pulled up. My dad, always on top of technology, caught it on his Super 8 camera. The film is shaky and dad says it's because he was so proud, he cried. Sigh. Some things never leave you.

Big V I like the fact your BD had the sense to make her lemonade stand a drive-thru.
No wonder it brought all the cops to the yard.

Did he check her sales tax certificate. Or is she claiming to be an internet business because her potential customers are now even in Australia and UK?

Can lemonade be shipped overnight by Fed Ex?

Urbane Guerrilla 08-05-2011 09:20 PM

I suppose they could ship properly packed liquids. Does squeezed lemonade, straight from the fruit, lose anything vital if sealed airtight, no bubbles inside the container?

ZenGum 08-06-2011 01:52 AM

Sundae for the double !

Imagine how rich she'd be if she had been selling donuts.
