Why would you DO that?
Why the heck would anyone choose the Iran/Iraq border for a hiking jaunt?
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/21...ays/?hpt=hp_t1 In fact, I googled best places in the world to hike, and I don't see any bombed out 500 million degree desolate warzones whatsoever listed on it. http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/21...ays/?hpt=hp_t1 Attention whores? The thrill of the action? The bombs bursting in air? Maybe they should've joined the service. Dudes, it's a free country. The world? Not so much. |
Their compass wasn't working??

Some people want to see the world, and are attracted to weird places like that. When I was in HS, my family went through Checkpoint Charlie and walked around East Berlin. We wanted to see it.
I think this is sort of similar. But it's crazier than going through Checkpoint Charlie. |

The voice of all those characters comes from one man - Mel Blanc. He can be seen in a Jack Benny rerun. Jack is buying Christmas presents. But after buying that wallet multiple times, the clerk (Mel Blanc) goes berserk - in a Looney Tunes fashion. Clerk eventually he kills himself.
TV was not worried about being politically correct when Bugs and company dominated the airwaves. |
That era of WB cartoons are awesome. There is some very sophisticated humour and cultural references in there, as well as the cross-dressing slapstick between Elmer and Bugs.
Those "hikers"? I can't decide my opinion on those. As a hiking trip, you'd have to be incredibly stupid to (a) choose that location and then (b) balls up your navigation, yet still fairly competant to even get there. As a CIA mission, it seems pointless and ameturish. Why go there? see something? Ha, send an aerial drone. Meet someone? there are much better ways than trying to sneak across a border undetected. Neither standard explanation makes sense. I guess they were up to some kind of shenanigans, but not CIA. Something private, possibly political, possibly regualr crime such as drugs. Shrug. |
According to the reports they were actually only next to the border with Iran when motioned over by a guard and then arrested. I don't think they even knew where the border was actually located. There was no fence and it was in a hilly area. I think they were duped.
