Feeling Pretty Stupid right now
Yesterday was opening day of regular (gun) deer season. I got to my stand about 20 minutes before sunrise but still a bit late. There was a buck standing in the middle of the field so I went past him and came to my stand from the next field.
I got to my stand and there were 4 deer camped out there and I spooked them. Fuck it. I got in the stand and waited about an hour. The buck came back and I had a perfectly clear shot at him but 1) he was sort of skylined. (There was a hillside across a road at the far end of the field. 2) He was only a 3 pointer and the guy who was mentoring me said I could take a 3 pointer since it was my first time, but I also knew that it's good to let them go another year. OK So I let it pass. Then I find out that 1) Even if I had missed, since I"m shooting 1 oz slugs they never would have made it al the way to the far side of the field 2) In the east we count all the spikes, not just the ones on one side. So I let a 6 point buck just walk away. It's a steep learning curve.:( |
gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
tomorrow is another day. |
I think you're smart.
Or at least wise, if under-informed. I know SFA about hunting, but surely, the rule must be: if in doubt, do not shoot. You'd have felt pretty silly getting teased by other hunters for taking that piddly little thing. You would have felt really stupid explaining to the cop why your stray round had .... done whatever. Of course, the really stoopid act was letting Brianna know you're out killing cute fluffy bambi parents. She won't love you long time no more. |
You know, if we all worried about feeling or appearing stupid when we're still learning, we'd never learn anything.
Keep learning. Soon you'll be a pro. :) |
I went hunting once and camped at the foot of a bluff, a place where the deer would walk down and cross a field to get to a stream. The deer came down the wooded hillside, split into two groups of about 5 each and walked around me. Man, I had the perfect shot when they hit the open field. The sun was coming up, and they looked amazing. I couldn't take the shot. Just watched them. I don't regret it.

Methinks the Universe is telling you that killing woodland creatures is wrong unless you are starving to death and will eat every bit and use every part of the animal.
I think the Universe is teaching a good lesson and will provide the sacrifice when it is needed. Are you going to make a pair of buttery soft moccasins from your kill? Are you going to use the antlers as a headdress for magical rites round the fire - thanking the Great Spirit for the magnificent beast you stole life from? Are you going to eat deer stew alllllll winter long whilst Mrs. Footfootfoot weaves blankets out of the deer hair? Or do you just want a cool 6 points to use as a hood ornament? :eyebrow: |
I think the deer are pointing and laughing at him. ;)
|
Laughing and pointing at him six times.
|
"When you point your antler at someone, remember, there are five antlers pointing back at YOU!" |
Priceless! |
This is why it's never good to pass the buck.
|
Joe: "I couldn't take the shot"
Then, you weren't hungry...hunt when hungry...no point otherwise.

And how natural a life has it lived? No, you don't kill it. But isn't that a positive for you? You don't have to wring its neck or pluck it or remove the giblets. And for chicken "products" you don't even have to butcher it. But the chance is, it lives and dies in extreme discomfort so we (yes, I include myself) have have white meat that used to be considered a luxury item, any time we fancy it. If I thought foot was killing for target practice, I would be anti. But I can't believe he is that kind of person. It's either culling or eating or both. |
deer populations Have to bee kept under control ,
Else there is famine and sickness , Feetz is the type to make use of most all the deer , hell I bet he'll have one of these Soon !!!http://www.rampant-books.com/product...t_doorbell.htm Attachment 35441 |
