A Manhattan man killed and dismembered two people so he could move into their apartments.

See, this is what rent control gets you.

I was wondering... did this guy really think that these people wouldn't notice that the new guy wasn't the original resident? Or was he counting on NYC being so big and cold that nobody would give a damn about it?

Perhaps he's just a new kind of realtor,

You say it in a form of jest, but the truth is New York IS that big and cold, unless you make the effort to shrink down and warm up the section closest to you.

If this guy kept to himself like many do, and never interacted with his neighbors, not even in going to a tenent's meeting, then few would notice him being gone.

New Yorkers aren't startled easily, nor instantly suspicious about changes in the normal routine. If they saw some different guy coming in and out of Shut-In's place, they'd probably think he was Shut-In's new roommate.

As my father still back in NYC once said:

Quote:

"Whenever we New Yorkers see something amiss, we find an explanation. If we can't, we glance long enough to accurately fill out a police report, then move along. The whole process takes about two seconds."

...I miss home.
