Thirty Days
Former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi gets thirty days. Thirty fucking days.
He should get more than thirty days just for me having to hear that shit for a fucking year and a half. The judge should have to do the time with him. What a fucking crock of shit. He's a smarmy looking little fuck, too. |
Wow. What b.s.
Bet they suspend 29 days of it too. |
Mother fuck should have gone to prison for 10 years. Not less. Another mis-justice.

I'm not condoning what this boy did, but there's probably a lot more to the story that we don't know.
How do you know the boy who killed himself wasn't racist or something? There had to be a reason the indian kid decided to do what he did. |
IMHO it is not ok to OUT people who do not want to be Outed. Not in this day and age. Yea we can all pat each other on the back and talk a good game about DADT or other bullshit feel good stuff but the reality is that it can still be a dangerous place for people who don't think like we do and we should not have a Right to put them at risk. The fuck should have gone to the Big House, JMHO.

The judge said it was a bias crime; not a hate crime. His interpretation will be aired in appeals file by both prosecution and defense.
Underlying his decision were details in a recently enacted New Jersey law. |
The article in the OP said he's already outted himself to his parents. Normally they're the last ones to know aren't they?
Anyway, this particular news item hasn't been in the media here, so today was the first I heard about it when I read this thread. I'll leave those of you more knowledgeable about the facts to argue the case. :) |
My take is that the actions of this guy were, in some part, responsible for the death of a human. For him to get 30 days is a travesty. Gay, black, female, Muslim, wtfe - doesn't matter to me.

On the one hand, the boy who committed suicide clearly had some underlying issues. If some bitch at the grocery store snarks, "Move out of the way, fattie," I don't think she should be held fully responsible if that happens to be the last straw for the overweight person and they decide to kill themselves. On the other hand, true bullying is of course completely unacceptable, and I didn't follow the case closely enough to find out if this was an isolated prank or a culmination of bullying behavior, a lot of which depends on what the roommate did with the video footage after he had it.
What I did read, though, is that at no point did the roommate show the slightest remorse at what had happened, and that he is now vigorously appealing his slap-on-the-wrist sentence. So fuck him. His character has shown through, and I because of that I say he deserves a longer sentence. |
I'm glad that we don't always impose sentences based on character showing through. Kid's a douchecanoe, but if it wasn't illegal (or illegal enough) that's a flaw in our laws, not in our justice system. Urge congress to expand anti-bullying legislation at a federal level.

Dharun Ravi was convicted of a bias crime and invasion of privacy. Relatively minor crimes. But he was also found guilty of witness tampering and hindering arrest. Latter two counts are more serious. Why did he get little punishment for that?
Dharun Ravi is an Indian immigrant. Had he been prosecuted in a Federal court, then deportation may have been a consideration. States cannot deport immigrants. |
