August 30, 2012 - Vogue turns 120

This year, Vogue celebrates its 120th anniversary by publishing a special editorial spread by photographer Norman Jean Roy in its September issue. These are two of the more interesting photos that I found.

In the huge variety of images posted, even just since I've been watching, fashion photography rarely, if ever, makes the grade. An amazing fact given the stunning and highly artistic imagery generally produced.

In the above image, I am amazed by the level of control the model shows while on the back of a huge, rearing beast. Look how her eyes show no fear. Then I noticed the thigh support on the saddle, which makes her seem a little less like a warrior woman, however strong and beautiful she looks.

Think that's a real 'orse though, mouth closed while rearing like that?

Sharpe would roast slabs of horsemeat in the cuirass of a cavalryman over a fire after a battle.

And no serious equestrian would ever ride a horse with a heel that tall and narrow. Not enough of the foot on the stirrup for support and control.

Serious equestrian? It's a Vogue model on a cover shoot.
There has been some digital manipulation.
