Lousiville Cardinals' Kevin Ware Breaks Leg vs. Duke
 

Right off the bat:

If you are squeamy at all, DO NOT WATCH THIS.

Last night, playing against Duke, Louisville's Kevin Ware jumps, going for a block. It looks like he lands fine, except for the compound tib/fib fracture in his right lower leg. Looks like his leg just decided to take a break, literally.

Hope he heals up ok. This could potentially be a career killer.

It's gruesome, you've been warned:

It's kinda funny watching the other players. You sort of forget that a lot of these kids are still just kids. Some of them look about ready to faint. Probably never seen anything that shocking.

You get the impression, what with the muscles, the athleticism, that these are all big, tough, macho guys.

Still just kids a lot of the time, though.

omg omg omg that is awful. Like the Joe Theisman leg break. Makes me want to cry FOR them.

I'm sure the other players really felt it. No one wants to see that happen.

Oh sheesh I'm reminded of my senior year in basketball where I hurt my knee and finally got back into a game mid-season, went for a rebound, and hurt my knee again. Had a quack doc, though. Nowadays they really work on rehabbing even HS athletes. I really think my knee cost me a track scholarship of some sort.

I hope they can help him...looks like it'd be real hard to recover from a break like that. Poor guy. :(

That was the worst thing I'd seen in sports since LT's cocaine fueled assault on Theisman. All the players were a mess. It seemed crazy to me that his parents were not there.

Ware's parents couldn't attend the game for some reason. They did get his girlfriend outta the stands (I think) so someone close to him could be with him.

Poor kid. Weird how his leg broke. It didn't seem to get bent the wrong way like when a football player gets tackled. I wonder if there was already a hairline fracture?

I know there's a lot of money in these college sports, but it's not like pro sports. Is the school going to take care of him, or do his parents now have to pony up for the expense? Compound fractures can be complicated and expensive and slow to heal.

I fulfilled my watching people break stuff quota when I was 12 and Emily fell over and broke her arm right in front of me. I took her to Matron and Matron actually thought Emily was bringing me in, because I had gone an interesting shade of green.

I haven't heard anything specifically about this, but I do know that most if not all major universities have group health insurance plans for their students (mandatory participation, with the cost included as part of the tuition.) It's not in their best interest for students to have to drop out because they went bankrupt on medical bills, and college kids are notoriously stupid about both hygiene and safety.

In theory, properly set bones heal and recover to full strength, so in six to twelve months, he should be fine, if a bit rusty. Better this than doing a knee ligament. Doubt he felt that way when it happened, though. ouchie!

I feel his pain, or more accurately, the pain of those watching. In 2008, I watched my daughter fall from her horse - came dislodged during a huge buck - and saw her hit the rock-hard August ground with her outstretched right hand, saw in slow motion her radius and ulna part ways and her elbow deform completely so that her forearm suddenly looked like a giant isosceles triangle, something completely incompatible with human anatomy - heard her scream and scream again as she saw the same thing - saw the horse land a few mm from her head and continue bucking.

I ran and grabbed the fucking horse and dragged him bodily away from my daughter. Threw his ass outside the training ring and didn't care for one moment if he ran into the road and was converted to equine pizza.

I relive that moment over and over in my dreams. The vision of her arm deforming so grotesquely.

She now has a titanium upper radius, because the orthopod couldn't put her arm back together. It'll be good unless she gives it another major trauma, such as falling from a horse.

Right now her third job, after cleaning offices at night and selling horse supplements, is riding.

Horse people (me included) are crazy.
