Nice take on it, Wolf, thank you. It was 1999, so I can't say I was too worried about my weight then. Or climbing into the sky in open toed heeled sandals. Ah the folly of yoof.

It was. We did the standards via the official tours: Lion Rock, Temple of the Tooth, Botanical Gardens, Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, Dambulla Caves, Spice Plantation.
I made friends with a couple from Belfast. We were warned never to travel with local tour guides as they were all on the make and we would be at risk of terrorism and gouging of the financial kind. You can imagine how that affected a couple from Northern Ireland in the '90s. Something along the lines of fuck you I won't do what you tell me. And they were really OLD - mid-40's or something... They adopted me and we went off the beaten track so to speak. Off to the old Portuguese fortress and lighthouse at Galle, a turtle hatchery, local restaurants, stopping at roadside stands, trips in tuk-tuks and late night cafes full of locals, watching the fishermen bring in catches at dawn (actually I yawned through gritty eyes and just wanted to be back in bed but I am glad I have it in my mind as a photograph.)
