A few days ago, I saw an image of the aftermath of that CME.
There was actually a "hole" created in the surface of the sun where temperatures are lower than surrounding areas. I have not yet found the link to that news article, but in the Gallery of CM's link there is an pic below close to what I remember. The blue areas are cooler "hole" |
If all goes well (no rogue huge asteroid smashes us to bits), a CME will be hitting what's left of the earth, as the sun begins to change into a red giant, followed by it morphing into a dwarf star, by a huge compression.
When the world ends, it's by fire, barring cosmic wandering disasters. |
The diameter of that loop is probably ten or twenty times that of the Earth. The sun is a mighty beast.
