American Hustle

I saw American Hustle last week. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good story, good acting, funny. It banked at the Golden Globes (the best awards show IMHO because they sit at tables and party) and has some good nominations for the Oscar:

Quote:

"American Hustle," a story about con artists based loosely on the late 1970s Abscam scandal, tied for the lead with 10 nominations. The movie was nominated in several major categories, including picture, director (David O. Russell), actor (Christian Bale), actress (Amy Adams), supporting actor (Bradley Cooper), supporting actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and adapted screenplay.
I'm completely uninterested in The Hunger Games stuff, but Jennifer Lawrence is so damn versatile. If you watch her in Winter's Bone, then see her in American Hustle...night and day. She's just a wonderful actress.

I keep forgetting Christian Bale's name because his character looks so different from him. His comb-over is the stuff of legends.

Bradley Cooper looks great in his 70s tight perm.

Amy Adams...just beautiful.

Has anyone else seen it?

I remember Abscam.

It's basically a footnote in history at this point. But I can see basing a movie on it.

J and I saw this yesterday and it was awesome. Book another great soundtrack by Danny Elfman too.

Yeah, when the opening credits were rolling and they were playing Dirty Work by Steely Dan, I knew I was in for a treat. :)

The microwave. Too funny, huh?

Her whole character was so stunning. All the characters were stunning and real, but hers seems over the top and yet still real. And you know you've seen people like that IRL, which is part of what made it hilarious at the same time.

I'm still knocked out by them bringing back 10538 Overture by ELO.

infinite monkey 01-21-2014 08:36 AM

That's the thing about Jennifer Lawrence. Her character is so hardened, so matter of fact, in "Winter's Bone" then she plays a character like this one...she blows me away.

I'm glad you two liked the flick. I was pretty excited about it when I saw it. I was just looking for a good movie to waste some time while my bathroom was being redone...I had no idea I was walking into a great movie. I mean, I looked at what was available and compared it with Wolf of Wall Street, online before I chose what to see...but I had no idea it was going to be such a great romp. I hate reviews of books or movies that use the word 'romp' but I'd be hard-pressed to think of a better one in this case.

Now Wolf is gone and last I looked it was nothing but crap at our theater. It's all superheroes or lone shooters or riding in cars with thugs. I want to see Her and Philomena and Wolf and Inside Llewyn Davis and August: Osage County, and Blue Jasmine, and...

I know the awards shows do not necessarily mark great films, but it's a good place to start looking, imho. Of course, I've got about 500 movies and my friends haven't heard of about half of them.
