Alcohol Might Be Good For You

I said might, not because my mother said everything is ok in moderation, but because I don't know if this article is true, partially true, or bullshit. However it makes some pretty bold statements from Stanton Peele's intriguing position.

Quote:

Even drinking more than is recommended, without displaying clinical symptoms of problem drinking or alcohol dependence (and these are not subtle), is generally better for you than drinking nothing
Quote:

The encouragement of undertaking drinking with the implication of prevention of coronary heart disease would be scientifically misleading and socially undesirable in view of the major health problem of alcoholism that already exists in the country.
Quote:

The more alcohol a society consumes, the fewer alcohol-related problems and alcohol-related deaths (including cirrhosis) it has.
Quote:

The overall death rates were lowest among men and women reporting about one drink daily. Mortality from all causes increased with heavier drinking, particularly among adults under age 60 with lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
I smell a little Oprah-Winfreyism here. :eyebrow:

Perhaps it is that the alcohol is still bad for you, but the positive social effects of drinking--both to the individual when they spend time out with others, as well as to the population when society is able to be open and accepting of adult behaviors--outweigh the negatives.

It's actually the opposite. Studies since the '80s French paradox have generally attributed intrinsic health benefits to moderate ETOH consumption (like a glass of wine a day) with some forms (e.g. red wine) being more beneficial than others. The stigma associated with social drinking here is thought to be undermining a beneficial integration of alcohol with foods in the American diet.

I can't comment on...

undermining a beneficial integration of alcohol
But that stigma associated with social drinking sure has fucked the club scene and live bands available to enjoy. Also killed most of the venues to learn the craft when they graduate from the garage.

I got an email tonight from a friend in Canada, telling me every time she lays off the wine for a week or so, she gets sick. ;)

Alcohol consumption is definitely beneficial to my husband. My consumption of course. Not his.

I've had the book Healing Wines in my medical library since the mid '80s. It's a fun read historical overview rather than a scientific study. While doing a search by title to see if it's still available, I came across this Wikipedia article that has some of the same info: Health effects of wine. It's a good read too.

Ha...I like this. Maybe this may apply to my family. My sister has been complaining that I seem to be angry all the time. Hmm....I think I will try out Ali's technique, hehe.

Gravdigr 08-19-2014 12:56 PM

Auntiedigr did that with her husband...

...she was angry at him all the time, and one night, she picked up the bottle.

And put it upside his head.

♪ ♫...laid him out as cold as a block of ice.♪ ♫

Well I don't hit my husband with the bottle. haha I never would. I don't drink to make myself happier either. It just makes me more mellow and I stop stewing on things. Lately it's just one vodka in the late arvo. Kind of like cocktail hour I guess. On the weekends I usually drink more. start earlier and finish later. Probably not the best way of dealing with things, but it will pass I assume.

I find some wine makes life bearable when I have to integrate integrity with reality. No one is a one-dimensional villain; that's the case in so much of life. We're all flawed, but sometimes we need wine to live together peaceably.

Big Sarge 08-21-2014 04:42 PM

I prefer alcohol to other medications. I seem to consume in larger quantities. I pour whiskey in a cup and drink it sometimes in one big guzzle. Don't judge. I am trying to be honest

Big Sarge 08-22-2014 08:01 AM

Uhhhhh. the next morning is hell

glatt 08-22-2014 08:03 AM

Good morning, Sarge.

Big Sarge 08-22-2014 08:15 AM

I'm trying to scan to see if I made any posts last night that were shameful. Plus I have to keep one foot on the floor because satanic forces or something are making everything move
