I have that chart attached to the fridge. The mm circled the chores 'she liked' and was put out when I asked her to do a chore she hadn't circled. "But I didn't circle that one." Not quite getting the concept.
The inch read the chart and asked "Disinfect doorknobs?" Now that is a running joke between the two of them. |
There are plenty of grown-ups who have trouble with these chores, whatever the age group ...

I am trying this summer to get both kids started with mowing the lawn.
Not really fair to the boy because he is starting mowing at an earlier age than she is, but life's not fair. He's a little small though and gets tired pushing the big mower. So I take turns with him and we mow it together. Actually, so far, I'm mowing the back swath around obstacles and then letting them do the rest. I don't want them to hit a concrete curb or pipe or something and break the mower. So far, my girl can't get the mower started, and my son can start it on the first pull, but my girl doesn't get spent when doing the mowing and my boy has to stop and rest. |
One can't start, and the other can't keep going...They both sound like me!

Many of those age appropriate tasks were assigned to me at those ages.
Some are anachronistic, some simply not considered necessary (disinfect doorknobs, I agree with the foot-kids!) The only ones I find age-inappropriate are some of those at age 2-3. I wonder if it assumes the help old many older siblings? The 2-3 year olds I have experience of simply would not have the awareness/ reasoning of what is needed for a meal in order to set a table for example. And I'm not talking about spoiled brats, I mean little ones who want to help and are involved around the house in "play" which later becomes useful. And if I wanted my baseboards dusted I wouldn't trust a two year old to do it. Luckily I can't see them at present, and they remain defiantly undusted. Maybe I should get me a 2-3 year old to clear the trash. |
Nah.
Just take 'em from this list: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently,” Robert Heinlein |
Well put traceur.
