Apr 5th, 2016: Light Pillars
Alaskan light pillars are reflected light, in this case from the ground, when there's a icy fog or light snow with flakes that are just right.

I love light pillar shots! :D The pillars happen around here fairly often at both sunrise and sunset. The attached photo is my favorite I've ever gotten of the phenomenon--a single vivid light pillar (I also have a shot where it's centered on the church spire, and bigger copies) with a pair of "sun dogs" caused by refraction of light through ice crystals--it was well below freezing that morning when I noticed the light had gotten downright weird.
