June 9th, 2016: Goose Girl
 

Between Hamburg and Frankfurt, near to the Harz mountains, the town of Gottingen, is best known for its university, founded in 1734, which became one of the most renowned of Europe, The University of Göttingen. Famous physicists Max Planck, Neils Bohr, and Max Born taught here. Like most university towns it has developed its own quaint traditions. One is of the bronze statue at a fountain in front of the old town hall.

The statue of the Goose Girl or Gänseliesel, erected in 1901 is a young girl carrying three geese in her arms. It was based on the famous fairy tale “Goose Girl”, which was written by the Brothers Grimm, also alumni of the University. Actually the original is in the museum there because of vandalism, so this is a copy.
Every student who acquires a doctorate degree are pulled in handcarts from the Great Hall to the Gänseliesel fountain, and required to climb the fountain to kiss the statue of the goose girl. Some have the decency to bring flowers. Originally, all new students got the chance to kiss the statue but tradition changed, so only doctorates are allowed to molest her.
Officially, goosing the Goose Girl is forbidden, but not enforced. In fact, both the city and the university advertise themselves with pictures of PhD graduates kissing the girl.

The University of Göttingen has produced well-known figures in various disciplines, including 47 Nobel laureates who had
either studied or worked here. John von Neumann, Werner Heisenberg, Enrico Fermi, Carl Friedrich Gauss, Bernhard Riemann,
David Hilbert, and J. Robert Oppenheimer, to name a few, were all students at the University.

So they molest the local girl then scatter around the world to be rich and famous, leaving Goose Girl
