A wedding poem

Ok...I've been working on this, on and off, for months, but most of this came together over the last four or five weeks. I said I'd write a poem for the two J's wedding next weekend (ohmigod it's so exciting! :) :))

So here it is - subject to a little tinkering between now and then...

Well, it's an old, old story,
but it's newly told each time,
two friends, fellow travellers,
on the same road, they find,
their footsteps fall into a pace,
each to the other.

And they tell each other tales of their pasts,
and share their dreams for the future
And fingers interlaced,
they step forward together

And the road took them to,
strange and wonderful places,
and they had many great adventures
They found hope and change in America,
and giant clocks in Prague,*
There was the new range at Christmas,
and dog walks in the park

And their love deepened with the years
Her family became his,
His life entwined with hers.

And now, to him I say,
I have known you nearly all my days,
since we were just a pair of teens,
who thought that we were grown.
And to her I say,
You are the best friend I have ever made
in all the years since I left my home town.

I'm so happy you're both happy,
and I am pleased and proud to be here now,
amongst this crowd, of well wishers,
All who love you gathered,
to see you stand together,
and make your solemn vows.

There is beauty in the journey
that you've made, but the best is yet to come,
For the road that you have travelled
has brought you to this place
where you have built your happy home.

So, to the hand-fasting,
the promise and the wedding rings
Well, we'll borrow the bluest sky
that we can find and raise it high above,
and wish for you a long and happy life together,
kind and full of love.

* not really giant, it was an 'astronomical clock', and they had great fun with that notion

I think they'll like that very much.

If they don't, they should.

Well done, Dana.

Thanks hon:) I hope they do. I think they will.

Of course now comes the hideousness of having to read out in front of everyone... ;p

Astronomical clock? Then not a giant clock, but a clock of giants. you know, scientists, astronomers, giants.

Anyway, nicely done. A thumbnail sketch of their history, your personal admiration, best wishes for the future, covered everything in a personal manner without sloppy gushing being maudlin. Very well done. :thumb:

Tomorrow. The wedding has finally arrived - the two Js are tying the proverbial knot. And several people will be reading out various things. I'll be reading my poem.

I'm a bit nervous about it.

How'd it go?

It went well!

Which was very gratifying - and also an immense relief because I made the nearly fatal decision to partake in a smoke that was going round, and it collided with the alcohol I'd consumed and left me feeling, about an hour before speeches and poetry readings, like I was about to white out completely.

Fortunately I was over the worst of it by the time I had to try and act like a functioning human being :p

Mr and Mrs J liked it :) That's the most important thing. Lot of other people also seemed to like it - that's a very nice bonus:)
