Trick here is to put bold tags around the "<" and ">"

Undertoad 06-30-2001 10:16 AM

I wonder why they worked originally!!

If you wanted to get really tricky, you could use ampersand gt semicolon and ampersand lt semicolon to create greater-than and less-than signs. (The ampersand symbol tells HTML that you want to display a special character; the semi-colon ends the special character code.)

Howzat!

Brilliant!
now all we need is a button on the posting page =)< rant >

just curious, shouldn't that mess up the #include statement in my sig, or does whatever magical spell that appends the signature account for that?

Steve

sig added for reference

Well I turned off HTML in sigs. A sig is something that's gonna show up every single time, and a lot of vbulletins out there have people putting images in their sigs, which is really annoying. IMO.

They also have "avatars" for the left-hand column, on a per-user basis, which I personally find tasteless, tacky, and etc. Modem users have to cringe. The whole page winds up with images and icons and crap everywhere. It's not funny, it's not fun.

Well maybe it is a little fun.

I would personally really dig the avatars, but you'd have to put a size limit on them. about 100k each, maybe. When you think about it, even on the busiest page you'd only have to load 5 or 6, and all the text would be loaded beforehand, so you can just scroll through and read as they load.

C'mon Tony...I just got linux running, I wanna put tux somewhere, man

Yes BUT that's part of the problem... no image geometry on these things means that they change the size and shape of the tables where you're reading text. Right in the middle of scanning a paragraph, it may move to another place on the screen after the image finally loads and pushes the display around.

So, you specify image geometry too. Say, your avatar/icon can be no bigger than 100 x 100 pixels, and no more than 40kb. Those are the limits for the LiveJournal standard style page formats. The AV Forum allows no larger than 40 x 40, IIRC. Stick 'em in a table of the maximum allowable size in the left hand column below user's name, and set the table dimensions no bigger than appropriate for the space, then let the picture float as a cell within the table.

Actually, if you really want to spare the modem users [there but for the grace of a nearby CO go I] you can limit the size more radically. My avatar image on AV Forum is only a little over 2k, and my largest avatar on LiveJournal is only 6k. A limit of 10k should be more than adequate, unless people want to use animated gifs.

I know it's kind of 'tasteless and tacky' and juvenile, but I just like avatars. :D And I've seen some pretty creative and amusing ones on LJ.

Blah.. I've stopped posting to several boards over the years because they went on the path of images in sigs.. avatars.. unnecessary individual customization.. etc.

My advice.. keep it simple.. saves you bandwidth and some users. (Ya there's already too much crap on "Post Reply" page.. what users can't manually italicize or us a smiley face...?)
