finals . . .

ugh . . . three big projects and no time left for them . . . luckily I'm almost done . . .

but it's that big push to finish the last one that is so tough.

btw, the projects are:

one 13-15 page web site, with triangulated color and in depth content, all written in emacs, image maps, frames (BLEH!), table on damn near every page, non-working "form" (like click to submit), and basically loads of content, almost all of which must be original, oh and toss in a few java scripts, some embeded sound, and maybe a little flash (25% complete)

one 3-4 minute video, almost any subject, must be all original content (drawings, video, pictures, etc), full sound (90% complete)

one DVD menu, 30sec-1min intro movie, full special features menu (deleted scenes or the like, but must have 3 of them), fully animated (like every button has a rollover), full sound compiled in director and exported as an .exe(100% complete)

software packages:
director, flash, dreamweaver, premiere, photoshop, illustrator, soundforge, and acid . . . to name a few :D

thankfully the dvd does not use original content, acutally used Blackhawk Down as the movie. Also kinda funny that two of these are complete director projects, and I opened the package for the first time about 5 weeks ago . . . thankfully nothing I'm doing is lingo heavy

anyway . . . just venting

If I ever get all nostaligic for the educational experience and say "gee, maybe I'll go back to school" someone remind me of this post ... ;)

(Seriously, I am considering finding a way to do a doctorate, if only to become insurance billable. Okay, so maybe I'm jazzed with the idea of being Dr. 'Wolf. I just need to find a doctoral program that gives credit for 'life experience.')

I now feel much better about my finals week, I can't bitch after reading that. I have 3 tests this week Wensday, Thursday, Friday, then 1 or 2 next week depending on whether I feel like taking my Bio Final or not, might just to insure an A. Oh and a 5 page paper due, that one will be cake. Then it's home to see my brother graduate, damn I feel old sometimes, I'm going to actually have to grow up someday.

Undertoad 05-05-2003 01:20 AM

I'll do the web site for you, but no flash.

juju 05-05-2003 01:38 AM

UT will help you change your user name.
Besides to me, and I'll bet I'm not alone, you ARE Dr Wolf.

elSicomoro 05-05-2003 10:05 PM

Nah...those psychology/psychiatry folk are quacks. :)

Someday, I'll get my Ph.D...and will be one of those assholes that insists on being called "Dr."

Couldn't agree more. I think that there is a higher proportion of idiots and charlatans in psychiatry/psychology than any other field. It's sometimes (mistakenly) believed to be an "easy" major, and while the classes themselves may be, the actual work can be extremely difficult and requires a lot of thinking on your feet to deal with folks who don't fit into nice, easy categorizations.

One of the aforementioned charlatans and I had an exchange one day ... there had been a presentation by some drug reps (free lunch!! and free pens and post-its!!) and I was doing some cleaning up afterwards, putting away the video equipment, etc. which was part of my job responsibilities at that time. I needed something from the psychologist who had overseen the presentation and I had the temerity to address him by his first name ... he pulled me aside later and explained exactly HOW IMPORTANT IT WAS that I call him "Doctor". He compounded his asshole-ness by adding that "one day, when you finish your degrees you will understand how important this is."

Well, I still don't understand it ...

BUT, some other staff member overhead this exchange. For the next two days I had people coming into my office congratulating me on my membership in the "Call me Doctor" club. It was a running joke at the hospital.

He got more upset when patients didn't address him as doctor. One of our nuts had rushed up to him in the hallway shouting "Dude, Dude!! You gotta get me outta here!!!"

He responded, "My name is Doctor [name deleted]."

The patient thought about this carefully, and rephrased his request.

"Doctor Dude, you gotta get me outta here!!"

The look on his face was described as priceless.

(*sigh*) i guess i can't complain about my finals after reading that, but i'm taking a statistics class, and it sucks, man i wish I could make a 3-4 minute video instead.

dave 05-06-2003 12:48 PM

I used to work with two men who had Ph.D's, both in computer science. Absolutely brilliant men, neither of whom cared if I called them "Doctor" or "Mr" or just by their first name. Humility, it seems, is rare among them, but I've been blessed to work with some great ones.

One of them, the younger gentleman, said to me of his 12 years of education for his Ph.D, "Looking back on it, it should be a crime to have spent that much time on education."

Archer 05-07-2003 09:24 AM

Finally!

I'm done!! Got a few more tweeks to put on the website . . . but all things considered . . . well it sucks. I'm ok with that at this point. It's not so bad that I would be embaressed to turn it in . . . and there are some parts of it that are really good (like the image map) :D It's not bad . . . it's just not where I really want it to be . . . I'm just out of time.

In any case, two finals to take today, and it's all over. Of course one final is 15 questions long and the prof gave us the key for the test. The other one is a normal test, but the prof gave us the questions, in the order they appear on the test, two weeks ago :D Yes, the program is much more focused on production than testing.

BTW, my "major" (I'm actually a general studies major because I've already taken 8 semesters) is informatics/new media. It's a really hot program at IUPUI (Indiana U, Purdue U @ Indianapolis). The program is great; highly demanding, and what you learn can be directly applied to the real world (which I am very pleased about).

To be honest, I've done more work in one 100 level class than I did for several of my 3 and 400 psych & soc classes five years ago. That's the plan though, the dept figures if you can't cut it in the 100 level then you have no business in the program.

What is really funny to me is that the dept has really upped their demands for quality; so you have some people that are at the 400 (and some at the 500, masters program) level, that are turning out crap (it just happens to be 3d crap (maya, and some 3d max)), while the quality standards for incomming students has gone way up (not something I'm upset about, just a bit of an observation).

The department is developing a new line of study in sound (currently there are only two dedicated sound classes), and the best way I can describe it, is to think of developing the next generation THX. And that seems to be the line I want to move in . . . though we will see :)

edit: I spell worse than a 3rd grader

I've never gotten that whole IUPU deal...Purdue and Indiana are both state schools, right? So, why not just use one or the other? Making me remember more than 4 letters...uncalled for!

Archer 05-07-2003 06:33 PM

I + U + P + U +I = ???

Ya, it's odd. The idea is this:

Indiana and Purdue are both in what would be hill jack towns (no offence to hill jacks) if not for the universities. IUPUI is set in downtown Indy.

Indiana is know for it's liberal arts programs, while Purdue is knows as a very strong science school. Put them both together and you get a well round school with a campus demographic unlike most. It's a huge commuter campus, and while your median age at, say Indiana, is probably close to 20 or 21, IUPUI is probably closer to 25-27. Kinda out of my ass numbers, but those types are thrown around a lot on campus.

Also to further confuse things for ya Syc . . .

There is a IUPUK (Kokomo), IPFW (Fort Wayne), IUSB (South Bend), and a few others . . . and on top of all that . . . there is an IUPUIC (Indiana, Purdue @ Indianapolis @ Columbus). It's an extension of the indy campus. :D

Archer, I feel your pain.

As an aside, I always have to laugh when the professors get so dead serious and tell us not to buy our term papers off the internet. I have a hard time believing that I can find a 20 page thesis paper on the progression of the greek anarthrous predicate from 300 BCE to 200 CE, with special emphasis on the divine properties in John 1:1.

Anyone? This is a cry for help.
