May 20th, 2019: Map Recycling
In 2015 an outfit called TeleGeography down in Washington, that’s DC not the hilly one, got sponsorship from an outfit called
PCCW Global in Hong Kong to make an up to date map of the intercontinental under ocean cables. The drafting guy, after whining about having to draw the whole damn world, decided to have his buddy at the National Archives steal a world map. The buddy being a good friend, and bribable, got them a nice map. A map that focused on the oceans, Magnus’ Carta marina from 1539. That’s the year, not the price. http://cellar.org/img/cablemapb.jpg They just had to draw in and label the cables, but that was so easy they added some information about cable placing and maintenance. They also added some of the hazards cables face down there and the primary enemy of the cables. http://cellar.org/img/cablemap1.jpg Then since they didn’t have to draw the whole damn world, they had time to add some performance specs of the various cables from the USA round trip to a few destinations. They did the same for Olde Blighty, and Hong Kong too http://cellar.org/img/cablemap2.jpg Last but not least they added some of the hazards the 44 ships and crews placing and taking care of these wet cables, face in the performance of their duties. http://cellar.org/img/cablemap3.jpg I think I'd be asking for Mo Money. By the way I lied, they didn't bribe a buddy to steal that map. After 500 years only Disney could keep a lock on it. link |
A GCHQ establishment being next door to the place where the trans-Atlantic cables come ashore on the north coast of Cornwall is pure coincidence.
Now, if you'll excuse me there's a helicopter overhead and some menacing chaps in dark glasses making their way down my drive. |
On the US side they terminate at a dirty, unlabeled warehouse in Wall Township, NJ, next to a Jiffy Lube and Joe's Pizzeria.
(That is how you do it people. Don't advertise where your good shit is.) |
1539?
Actually South America was fatter in those days. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:O...rldMap1570.jpg |
