If you buy eBooks you might give this place a shot.

I find myself wondering what I am missing by never having even held one.

If you have a smartphone, you've potentially held one... you can get the Kindle app on your phone and read from there. I've run through at least a dozen books in 5-to-20 minute increments just waiting for my kids to finish some activity or another.

I think my flip phone would melt.
One medical provider I am saddled with makes smart phones mandatory. F 'em. |
I took a quick look and it does look like they do a pretty good job giving them better production values to public-domain texts than Project Gutenberg. (Which has been releasing epubs and other formats for years now.) However, they're formatted for either an ereader or ereader software, and it for whatever reason you want an actual text file, or HTML, it looks like you should stick with Project G.

Yes their schtick is eBooks for eReader formats.

I was reading an amazon review and a particular ebook title was taking a lot of heat for being glitchy. Is that still a thing? I used to use a kindle and would occasionally download a messed up book.

I don't know how common it is, but it's all on the publisher to have it edited properly. Once in a while I've gotten one with a nonfunctioning table of contents or something like that. It's not rocket science (I'm not familiar with the Amazon format, but epub is basically a zip file full of HTML) but there's still plenty of chances for things to get messed up.
